Job description

Chief Financial Officer
Boys & Girls Club of the Northern Plains
The Organization

Boys & Girls Club of the Northern Plains (BGCNP) is a mission-driven, multi-community organization serving young people and families across Brookings, Elkton, Moody County, Yankton, Milbank, and Vermillion. Through safe, welcoming environments and high-quality programs, BGCNP helps young people build meaningful relationships with caring adults, develop character and confidence, strengthen academic and life skills, and envision promising futures.

BGCNP has grown significantly in recent years, expanding its reach, partnerships, and organizational complexity. Today, the organization is entering an important next chapter, one that calls for strengthening its financial and operational foundation while continuing to respond to the evolving needs of young people, families, and communities across the region.

Vision:

Boys & Girls Club of the Northern Plains, Inc. will be a dynamic, diverse organization recognized as a champion for youth and a leader in positive change worldwide.

Values:

Excellence - We strive for quality within our staff, programs, board, and environment.

Impact Driven - We believe that every person, youth, and staff can reach their full potential when guided by high expectations and impact-driven decisions.

Teamwork - By staying flexible and working as a team, we believe we can obtain success in meeting our individual and group goals.

Good Character - We value respect, understanding, honesty, equality, patience, and trust.

Our Mission

To inspire and enable all young people, especially those who need us most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring, and responsible citizens.

The Opportunity

The next Chief Financial Officer will join BGCNP at an important inflection point. Following a period of significant organizational growth, BGCNP is focused on strengthening the financial and operational foundation required to sustain its impact and thoughtfully pursue future opportunities.

The CFO will have the opportunity to bring greater clarity, consistency, and strategic insight to a complex financial environment that includes multiple locations, restricted and unrestricted funding, philanthropic support, public funding, and reimbursement-based revenue. This leader will help improve financial systems and controls, strengthen cash-flow planning, streamline treasury practices, and equip organizational leadership with timely, decision-ready information.

Working in close partnership with the CEO, executive leadership team, Board of Directors, and Finance Committee, the CFO will help BGCNP translate its mission and aspirations into sound financial strategies. The role calls for a leader who can balance stewardship with possibility: protecting the organization’s financial health while helping colleagues determine when and how BGCNP can responsibly grow.

For a finance executive motivated by mission, organizational building, and collaborative leadership, this is an opportunity to make an enduring contribution to BGCNP and the communities it serves.

Position: Chief Financial Officer
Location: Brookings, SD
Reporting Relationship: Chief Executive Officer
Website: https://www.greatfuturessd.org/

Purpose of the Position

Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer and serving as a member of the executive leadership team, the Chief Financial Officer will lead BGCNP’s financial strategy, accounting, reporting, compliance, treasury, and financial operations.

The CFO will be a trusted advisor to the CEO and Board of Directors, providing transparent analysis, sound judgment, and clear recommendations that strengthen both day-to-day decision-making and long-range planning. This leader will ensure that BGCNP has the systems, controls, processes, and financial insight necessary to steward its resources responsibly, manage a complex funding environment, and advance its mission sustainably.

Success will require a leader who can operate at both strategic and practical levels: engaging the board in high-level financial discussions, collaborating across the organization, mentoring staff, and becoming directly involved in systems and processes when needed.

The Leadership Mandate

The incoming CFO will be expected to:

  • Strengthen financial visibility and discipline. Improve the quality, consistency, and timeliness of financial reporting so that the CEO, executive team, board, and Finance Committee have a clear understanding of BGCNP’s financial position.
  • Advance cash-flow and treasury management. Develop stronger forecasting practices, improve visibility into the timing and availability of funds, and streamline the management of bank accounts, restricted resources, and reimbursement-based revenue.
  • Build scalable systems and processes. Assess existing financial systems, controls, policies, and workflows and establish an infrastructure capable of supporting a complex, multi-location organization.
  • Support sustainable decision-making. Develop budgets, forecasts, financial models, and scenario analyses that help leadership evaluate programs, investments, partnerships, and future growth opportunities.
  • Strengthen board partnership. Translate complex financial information into clear, succinct, and actionable guidance for the Board of Directors and Finance Committee.
  • Develop people and organizational capacity. Lead with a collaborative, team-oriented approach; clarify roles and expectations; mentor staff; and create processes that strengthen accountability across the organization.
  • Partner across functions. Work closely with development and organizational leadership to strengthen revenue planning, contribution tracking, fund stewardship, and the financial underpinnings of fundraising and partnership strategies.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic and Organizational Leadership
  • Serve as a strategic financial advisor to the CEO, executive leadership team, Board of Directors, and Finance Committee.
  • Contribute financial insight to organizational strategy, annual planning, resource allocation, and the evaluation of future opportunities.
  • Build a culture of transparency, accountability, collaboration, and sound financial stewardship.
  • Communicate financial results, risks, tradeoffs, and recommendations clearly and succinctly to financial and non-financial audiences.
Financial Planning, Analysis, and Treasury
  • Lead annual budgeting, multi-year forecasting, cash-flow planning, scenario modeling, and financial performance analysis.
  • Develop meaningful financial metrics, dashboards, and benchmarks that support timely organizational decision-making.
  • Strengthen treasury practices and provide clear visibility into cash availability, restricted funds, reimbursement timing, debt, and other financial commitments.
  • Conduct financial analysis related to investments, programs, contracts, pricing, partnerships, and potential growth opportunities.
Accounting, Controls, and Compliance
  • Ensure accurate, timely financial statements and accounting records across all organizational units.
  • Strengthen internal controls, policies, procedures, and reconciliations to safeguard organizational assets and maintain financial integrity.
  • Oversee audit preparation, tax and regulatory filings, grant reporting, debt and covenant compliance, and adherence to applicable accounting standards.
  • Ensure the timely and accurate administration of accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, collections, and other core financial processes.
  • Evaluate and enhance financial technology, data-management tools, and related security and continuity practices.
Team and Cross-Functional Partnership
  • Lead, mentor, and develop finance and business-support staff, establishing clear expectations and an effective departmental structure.
  • Partner with development leadership to reconcile contributions, strengthen revenue forecasting, and ensure appropriate fund and donor reporting.
  • Build productive relationships with auditors, financial institutions, funders, government partners, and other external stakeholders.
  • Collaborate across departments to improve financial understanding, planning, and accountability.
The Candidate

While technical financial expertise is essential, the successful candidate will also be a relationship-builder, organizational leader, and strategic thinker who understands that finance can be a catalyst for mission impact.

BGCNP seeks a CFO who takes initiative, assumes ownership, and approaches leadership with a collaborative "we" orientation. This individual will be transparent, highly organized, authentic, and comfortable communicating candidly with the CEO, board, staff, and external partners. The CFO will be able to translate complex financial information into clear, succinct guidance without losing sight of the people and mission behind the numbers.

The ideal candidate will combine strong nonprofit financial knowledge with a practical business orientation. This leader will bring the judgment to challenge assumptions, the humility to listen and learn, the resilience to address inherited complexity, and the willingness to become directly involved in the work while building stronger systems and developing others.

Experience and Professional Qualifications
  • A meaningful track record of progressively responsible financial leadership experience (5+ years), ideally within nonprofit organizations; experience with fund accounting and GAAS strongly preferred.
  • Proven management and supervisory experience, demonstrating the ability to effectively lead, mentor, and develop a team.
  • Expertise with financial software systems and advanced proficiency in spreadsheet and data-management tools; prior experience with FE NXT strongly preferred.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of US GAAP, IRS regulations, and tax compliance requirements for 501(c)(3) organizations.
  • Demonstrated experience strengthening financial controls, treasury practices, cash-flow forecasting, and reporting in a complex or growing organization.
  • Ability to manage financial complexity involving restricted funds, grants, reimbursement-based revenue, and multiple operating accounts or entities.
  • Track record of building or scaling financial systems, processes, and teams to support organizational growth.
  • Ability to prepare and present clear, concise, board-level financial updates and recommendations.
  • A collaborative leadership style and demonstrated ability to build trust across executive, board, staff, community, funding, and financial stakeholder groups.
  • Experience partnering with fundraising or development teams and supporting philanthropic, corporate, or community partnerships.
  • A combination of nonprofit financial expertise and private-sector or business-oriented experience is strongly valued.
  • Strategic thinker with the ability to analyze complex financial data and clearly communicate financial strategies, results, and projections to diverse stakeholders, including
