Job summary

Belmont University seeks a Student Employee to support chemistry and physics teaching labs. As a Laboratory Assistant, you will prepare media and reagents, handle chemicals, and help keep equipment ready for classes.

Rate is $10.00 per hour. Federal Work-Study students are required; enrollment in Belmont's FWS program is necessary to be considered. You will work under supervision of faculty and the Laboratory Manager.

Qualifications

  • Must be enrolled as a Belmont University student and major/minor in Chemistry or Physics.
  • Federal Work-Study eligibility is required.
  • Able to complete essential job functions in teaching labs.
  • Will work under supervision in laboratory settings.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare media/reagents, aliquot solutions and handle chemicals as needed.
  • Move/distribute equipment, models, supplies, and glassware as needed.
  • Clean laboratory benches, equipment, supplies, and glassware as needed.
  • Communicate with faculty and staff to ensure laboratory activities are set up, restocked, and cleaned up in a timely manner.
  • Collect, segregate, and dispose of laboratory wastes properly.
  • Complete work assignments safely using PPE and safety devices.
  • Assist with inventory control, MSDS collection, and data entry operations.
  • Perform other general laboratory tasks as assigned.

Hourly Rate: $10.00

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

Daily duties and direct supervision will be provided by the faculty/staff member(s) responsible for specific laboratory courses. General oversight will be provided by the Laboratory Manager for the Department of Chemistry and Physics.

  • Prepare media/reagents, aliquot solutions and handle chemicals as needed.
  • Move/distribute equipment, models, supplies, and glassware as needed.
  • Clean laboratory benches, equipment, supplies, and glassware as needed.
  • Communicate with faculty and staff to ensure that laboratory activities are set up, restocked, and cleaned up in a timely manner.
  • Collect, segregate, and/or dispose of laboratory wastes properly.
  • Complete work assignments safely using necessary personal protective equipment and other safety devices.
  • Assist with inventory control, material safety data sheet collection, and data entry operations.
  • Perform other general laboratory tasks as assigned.
Required Qualifications

Applicants must be able to complete and perform essential job functions and responsibilities as specified.

Daily work assignments and direct supervision will be provided by the faculty and/or staff members responsible for specific laboratory courses.

Student laboratory assistants will primarily work in teaching laboratories without continual supervision. Adherence to laboratory safety and health policies is required, including the use of all necessary personal protective equipment and other safety devices.

Must have Federal Work Study to be considered.

Required Education

Must be currently enrolled as a Belmont University student. Applicants should be majoring or minoring in Chemistry or Physics. For certain courses, such as those within the Honors or Audio Engineering Technology programs, applicants with other majors or minors will be considered if they are currently enrolled in the course or have taken the course.

Required Experience

Applicants must be currently enrolled in laboratory courses or must have taken laboratory courses within the College of Sciences and Mathematics.
