Job summary

Battelle seeks a Chemist for the West Desert Test Center to serve as a Chemistry and CWA SME, addressing DoD CBRNE/WMD threats and safety concerns.

In this role you will conduct synthesis, signatures analysis, detection, and decontamination, while developing training and course materials for students with varying chemistry backgrounds.

You will also perform applied research on current threats and translate findings into practical coursework and demonstrations, maintaining strict safety standards.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree or higher in chemistry/physical science/engineering or equivalent laboratory experience.
• Ability to independently research complex topics and develop expertise.
• Ability to lead classroom and lab instruction for varied student levels.
• Must be able to obtain and maintain TS/SCI clearance.

Job Summary

We are currently seeking a Chemist. This position is a full-time opportunity located at West Desert Test Center.

In this role, you will serve as a Chemistry and Chemical Warfare Agent (CWA) Subject Matter Expert (SME), providing technical expertise on Department of Defense CBRNE and WMD threats. Your work will span synthesis, signatures analysis, detection, decontamination, counter-proliferation, and safety protocols related to CWAs and relevant precursors.

You will also conduct applied research on technical and intelligence issues pertaining to current and emerging WMD threats to the U.S. and allied nations, translating findings into actionable course content for students ranging from those with little to no chemistry background to those with advanced subject matter expertise.

Responsibilities

• Serving as a Chemistry and CWA Subject Matter Expert on issues pertaining to DoD CBRNE/WMD threats, including synthesis, signatures analysis, detection, decontamination, counter-proliferation, and associated safety hazards and protocols
• Delivering classroom, laboratory, field, and hands-on chemistry instruction to student groups, guiding learners through laboratory synthesis activities and adapting curriculum to varying levels of student knowledge
• Conducting applied research on technical and intelligence issues related to current and emerging WMD threats to U.S. and allied nations, and incorporating findings into relevant course material
• Developing training course materials, including lesson plans, instructional content, laboratory activities, practical exercises, and supporting course documentation
• Generating and evaluating data, defining problems, and designing experiments, training modules, and demonstrations
• Working with or around highly toxic materials in a safe and compliant manner

Key Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, another physical science, or Engineering (or an equivalent combination of education and chemistry laboratory experience)
• Demonstrated ability to independently research complex technical topics and quickly develop subject matter expertise
• Ability to serve as the primary instructor for classroom and laboratory sessions, providing clear and concise instruction, guiding students through laboratory synthesis activities, and adapting delivery to varying levels of student knowledge — from those with little to no chemistry background to those with advanced understanding
• Must possess or have the ability to obtain and maintain a TS/SCI security clearance.

Preferred Qualifications

• Master's degree in Chemistry, another physical science, or Engineering (or an equivalent combination of education and chemistry experience)
• Experience working with energetic materials, or willingness to learn
• Prior experience providing technical instruction to student groups in classroom, laboratory, or hands-on training environments
• Experience operating analytical instrumentation, primarily GC/MS
• Prior familiarity or experience with CWA/CBRNE operations, including teaching, training, synthesis, signatures analysis, detection, decontamination, counter-proliferation, or intelligence applications
• Prior experience teaching or working with military personnel

Compensation Data

Battelle is committed to fair and equitable compensation practices. The salary range for this role is $65,000 – $75,000 per year, in addition to our comprehensive benefits package. A candidate's salary is determined by various factors, including but not limited to education, relevant work experience, skills, and certifications. Salary ranges may vary based on geographic location and market conditions.
