Job description

Overview

This position is responsible for leading the functions of an analytical test department, including the generation and reporting of analytical data and prioritizing sample load. The employee maintains turnaround‑time and test requirements required of the clients.


Responsibilities


  • Provides a safe and clean working environment by adhering to and promoting safety policies.

  • Establishes sample flow, test priority, production totals, and works with the laboratory team to ensure turnaround‑times are not exceeded.

  • Performs analytical analyses on samples of varying matrices, verifies accuracy and completeness of in‑progress paperwork, enters test data, and generates analytical reports.

  • Verifies final reports and accuracy of analytical data.

  • Installs, calibrates, repairs, and maintains department equipment, providing technical and troubleshooting support for testing and equipment maintenance.

  • Provides technical support on the interpretation, recommendations, and guidelines for analytical data.

  • Ensures adherence to applicable ASTM, ISO, or EPA test procedures and protocols and makes necessary modifications for analysis of difficult sample matrices.

  • Updates department Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), quality control documentation, and related materials as needed.

  • Maintains generated waste in appropriate containers and within time guidelines.

  • Provides clients with information on sample status and resolves client inquiries, requests, and problems.

  • Delivers results by phone or e‑mail as required.

  • Provides 24‑hour support when on‑call.

  • Provides training to laboratory personnel as necessary.

  • Performs any other duties assigned by management.


Qualifications


  • A BS or BA degree in chemistry, biology, or a related field plus 3 years of laboratory experience.

  • Experience with a range of analytic testing equipment and procedures or a combination of relevant education and work experience sufficient to fulfill the position’s responsibilities within a brief period of employment.

  • GC experience highly desirable.

  • Ability to meet demanding deadlines while maintaining attention to detail while completing tasks.

  • Willingness to take on added responsibilities and challenges to grow within the role.

  • Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills to compile and present to all levels of organization, internal and external contacts.

  • Excellent organizational skills, with the ability to coordinate tasks and meet deadlines in a dynamic environment.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Proficiency in computer applications such as word processing, spreadsheets, and database management.
