Job summary

National Laboratory of the Rockies in Golden, CO is seeking an Undergraduate/Graduate Intern (year-round) in Chemical Engineering, Biomass conversion, Catalytic upgrading, and Organic Chemistry. The internship supports the Integrated Carbon Conversion Processes Group with hands-on lab work and research activities.

The role involves operating batch and flow reactors, developing polyurethane materials, and working with analytical tools such as FTIR, NMR, TGA, DSC, and GC-MS.

Qualifications

• Minimum GPA 3.0 cumulative.
• Undergraduate: full-time student in a bachelor’s degree program.
• Post Undergraduate/Graduate: completed degree within past 12 months; eligible for internship up to 1 year.
• Graduate: full-time student in a master’s program; PhD student path possible.

Responsibilities

• Batch and flow reactor operation for algal pretreatment, conversion, chemical production and polymer synthesis.
• Develop renewable polyurethane materials for a broad range of applications.
• Benchtop wet chemistry, including sample preparation and derivatization.
• Operation and maintenance of analytical instrumentation (FTIR, NMR, TGA, DSC, GC-MS).
• Separations, including liquid-liquid and solid-liquid extractions.
• Bioprocessing scale-up.
