About the Role

SET Environmental is seeking a versatile, highly skilled Senior Chemical Engineer to provide team leadership, technical expertise, and hands‑on operational support for complex, non‑routine field projects and facilities.

In this role, you will bridge the gap between high‑level engineering design and field execution. You will be responsible for the end‑to‑end lifecycle of technical projects—incorporating equipment design, chemical applications, and regulatory compliance—as well as real‑time, on‑site troubleshooting. The ideal candidate is an adaptable, hands‑on problem‑solver who communicates effectively with all levels of management, partners directly with our sales team for site scoping, and is comfortable pivoting from drafting engineering modifications to working side‑by‑side with technicians using hand and power tools to execute projects safely and efficiently.

What You’ll Do

  • Hands‑On Field & Tool Proficiency: Utilize hand tools and power tools proficiently to build, maintain, and modify specialized laboratory instruments, treatment systems, and field equipment.
  • Sales Collaboration & Site Scoping: Partner directly with the sales team to go out into the field, visit client sites, scope out upcoming projects, and define technical project requirements.
  • Engineering Design & Modification: Design, modify, update, and optimize engineering blueprints, P&IDs, and process flowcharts for new and existing equipment (including air handling/scrubbing, wastewater treatment, distillation columns, catalyst reactors, and heat exchangers).
  • Cross‑Functional Communication: Act as a strong, clear communicator capable of bridging technical details and executive strategy to collaborate seamlessly with all levels of management, field teams, and external clients.
  • Chemical Application Expertise: Leverage a deep understanding of chemistry and hands‑on manufacturing or similar industrial field experience working safely with a wide variety of industrial chemicals.
  • Project Preparation & Cost Estimation: Lead front‑end job preparation by performing mathematical/chemical calculations, creating accurate cost estimates, and drafting robust safety plans.
  • Field Execution & Real‑Time Troubleshooting: Provide direct engineering support and leadership on‑site, working actively alongside technicians during project execution and managing real‑time, unplanned solutions.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Maintain strict adherence to DOT, RCRA, and TSCA regulations across all office, laboratory, and field settings.

What You'll Bring

Education & Experience

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, or a related science/engineering field (Required). Advanced degree (Master’s) is preferred.
  • Experience: Minimum 8 years of progressive, verifiable experience working with chemical processes in manufacturing, utilities, natural gas transmission, or pipeline fields.
  • Licensure & Certifications:
  • Professional Engineer (PE) License (or currently working toward it) is highly desired.
  • Process Safety Management (PSM) certification is strongly preferred, or a willingness to obtain it.

Technical & Core Skills

  • Tool & Equipment Proficiency: Demonstrated ability to safely and proficiently use a variety of hand tools and power tools for mechanical modifications and equipment maintenance.
  • Chemical Acumen: Comprehensive understanding of chemical interactions, manufacturing chemistry, and safe chemical handling protocols.
  • Engineering Mastery: Expertise in modifying and reading engineering blueprints (P&IDs, process flowcharts) and laboratory testing procedures.
  • Communication: Exceptional written and verbal English communication skills, with a proven ability to present technical information clearly to all levels of management.
  • Adaptability: A self‑starter capable of managing non‑standard project variables, field sales scoping, and real‑time operational pivots.

Physical & Travel Adaptability

  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs, don proper PPE, work in a 30% office / 70% field environment, and travel up to 30% of the time to visit client sites with the sales team.
