Job summary

Hy-Vee, Inc. is seeking a Checker/Stocker to support store operations by handling checkouts, stocking shelves, and assisting customers. The role requires active engagement, a friendly demeanor, and a readiness to learn and contribute to a fast-paced retail environment.

You will greet customers, operate the register, manage payments, and help keep shelves stocked and tidy while following store policies and safety guidelines.

Qualifications

  • No education or experience required; we will provide all the training you need to succeed.
  • Physical ability to frequently lift, carry, push, or pull objects weighing up to 100 pounds or more.
  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.

Responsibilities

  • Provide prompt, friendly customer service by greeting customers with a smile and assisting at the register.
  • Operate the cash register and process all payment types.
  • Stock, face, rotate merchandise and ensure proper presentation on shelves.
  • Unload product, stock shelves, and support drive-up and carry-out service.
  • Maintain cleanliness and safety in the register area and stockroom.

In this role, you’ll handle everything from processing transactions and bagging groceries to unloading product and rotating merchandise. If you enjoy staying active, take pride in a well-stocked store, and love helping customers, we’d love to have you on our team.What You’ll DoNo two shifts are exactly the same, but here’s what you can expect:Provide prompt, friendly customer service by greeting customers with a smile, learning their names, and going out of your way to make every visit a great oneOperate the cash register accurately, scanning product and processing all payment types including cash, checks, credit cards, coupons, food stamps, WIC checks, rain checks, in-store charges, and lottery transactionsCount back change, issue receipts, and provide cash refunds or credit memorandums for returned merchandise as neededEnsure compliance with local, state, and federal guidelines regarding WIC, food stamps, and the sale of tobacco, liquor, and lottery ticketsPlace merchandise in bags or boxes, assist courtesy personnel, and support drive-up and carry-out serviceUnload product, open containers, stock shelves, and rotate product to ensure freshness and proper presentationStock, face, and rotate merchandise, clean shelves, understand shelf tags, and take customers to items when requestedStay knowledgeable of item look-up numbers, department numbers, item features, and weekly ad price changes and sale itemsKeep the register area clean, ensure adequate supplies are available, and report improper cash levels in the cash drawerVerify register balances at the beginning and end of each shift where applicableCommunicate clearly on the intercom or telephone and answer customer questions, following up with appropriate personnel as neededStay aware of your surroundings to support store safety and securityAssist store management with displays and decorations for special promotions and events as neededAssist in other areas of the store as needed and take on special projects as assignedMaintain strict adherence to personal hygiene, dress standards, and all Hy-Vee policies and store guidelinesReport to work when scheduled and on timeYour SkillsTo be successful, you’ll need to be able to:Follow detailed written or verbal instructions and work through tasks with a few concrete variablesPerform arithmetic calculations involving fractions, decimals, and percentagesUnderstand and follow verbal or demonstrated directions and communicate supply needs orally or in writingWork effectively as part of a team to deliver a great customer experienceReporting RelationshipsAccountable and Reports to: Store Director; Store Manager; Assistant Managers of GM, Perishables, and Store Operations; Service ManagersEducation and ExperienceNo education or experience requirements; we will provide all the training you need to succeedPhysical RequirementsAbility to frequently lift, carry, push, or pull objects weighing 100 pounds or more, with or without mechanical assistanceContinuously stand and walk on hard surfaces for extended periodsWhere applicable to the role: ability to operate pallet jacks, forklifts, or similar material-handling equipment (required operator certification must be completed prior to independent use)Work in cooler or freezer environments for extended periodsWhere applicable to the role: ability to safely use sharp knives and blades to cut, trim, or grind productWhere applicable to the role, and in accordance with applicable age and legal requirements: operate a cardboard baler or compactorWhere applicable to the role: perform repetitive motions associated with dough mixing, scaling, and proofingAbility to unload, lift, stock, and rotate incoming truck freight and merchandiseWorking EnvironmentThis is a fast-paced role in a retail store environment where you will be on your feet throughout your shift. You will have daily exposure to dirt, noise, equipment movement hazards, and cleaning chemicals or solvents, with occasional exposure to temperature extremes, dampness, and potential electrical hazards.
