Summary

Provides oversight of the activities on a nursing unit during a specific shift including serving as a resource to staff, directing patient flow, precepting or mentoring staff, assuring appropriate utilization of resources, and providing oversight for the provision of quality care in a manner satisfying to patients.

Responsibilities

• Performs all duties included in the registered nurse job description.
• Evaluates one’s own nursing practice in relation to professional practice standards and relevant statutes and regulations, identifying short and long‑term professional goals.
• Maintains current knowledge, serves as a resource on departmental policies, procedures and processes, and assists in education and assuring compliance.
• Assists in finding creative solutions to issues and contributes knowledge to process and quality improvement.
• Utilizes the ANA scope and standards practice and the code of ethics for nurses with interpretive statements as the foundation of nursing practice.
• Mentors others in areas such as competency, documentation, equipment use, plan of care, National Patient Safety Goals and participation in in‑service education.

Minimum Education Qualification

1‑year nursing experience in area of specialty or previous charge nurse or supervisory experience.

Minimum Certification Qualification

• Current registered nurse license in the State of Alaska.
• Current Basic Life Support card required.
• All other certifications as required for specific work area: New Employees must obtain the required Certifications within six months of hire; Contract and MOA employees must come to us with the required training completed as outlined in their individual contracts/MOAs, and must be licensed as a registered nurse by the State of Alaska and remain active with all annual licensing requirements.

Preferred Education Qualification

Bachelor’s degree in nursing preferred.

Preferred Certification Qualification

Specialty certification applicable to position.

Additional Requirements

Must have participated in 30 hours every 2 years continuing education in nursing in general, 16 of which are in the specific area of practice. Successful completion of Charge RN training program within 3 months of promotion to charge RN. Successful completion of preceptor training program within 3 months of promotion to charge RN.

May be required to work outside the traditional work schedule.

May be called out to work off‑shift in emergency situations.

According to the needs of the organization, some incumbents in this job class may be required to obtain specific technical certifications and programming language skills.

Charge House Supervisor Nurse

Specifically assist in providing oversight of the House Supervisors, Transfer Center, Float Pool Nurses, Patient Observers (PO), and Patient Care Technicians (PCT) during a given shift.

Rounding/breaks/lunch assistance to the TED space, 2 Central, House Supervisors, Transfer Center.
