Job summary

System Support is seeking a Chaplain - Support in a hospital setting to join the Pastoral Care team at AMC. The role provides spiritual and emotional support to patients, families, and staff, and facilitates worship opportunities and interfaith collaboration.

The chaplain participates in crisis response, supports decision making with patients and families, and helps coordinate education and grief support programs within the department.

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Theology, Spiritual/Pastoral Care, or related field.
  • Area of study: Divinity, Theology, Pastoral/Spiritual Care.
  • 4 Units Clinical Pastoral Education preferred.
  • 1–3 years of related experience.

Responsibilities

  • Assess needs and provide spiritual and emotional support to patients, families, and staff.
  • Respond to crises and assist with difficult healthcare decisions.
  • Document spiritual/pastoral support and services provided to patients and families.
  • Facilitate grief processes, support groups, and related education.

Chaplain - Support

Unit: Pastoral Care | Hours: Varied | Status: PRN | Facility: AMC

Position Summary

As a full member of the healthcare team, the Support Chaplain participates in the Spiritual Care Department’s ministry of presence, spiritual and emotional support, and encouragement for patients, families, and staff. The Support Chaplain also facilitates support groups, provides sacramental and worship opportunities, provides support for patients and families struggling with difficult healthcare decisions, promotes collaboration with local faith communities, and serves as a visible symbol of care for the whole person.

Essential Duties & Functions
  • Assesses needs and provides patients, family members, and staff with spiritual and emotional support.
  • Responds to crises and referrals and supports patients and families struggling with difficult healthcare decisions.
  • Documents spiritual/pastoral support and services provided to patients and families struggling with difficult healthcare decisions.
  • Facilitates the grief process through spiritual/pastoral support, support groups, and education.
  • Plans, prepares, coordinates, and facilitates prayer and liturgical and sacramental ministry opportunities for patients, families, and staff.
  • Accomplishes and cares for departmental administrative and operational tasks and responsibilities as assigned.
  • Serves as a spiritual/pastoral resource to other hospital programs.
  • Participates in and helps facilitate support groups and spiritual enrichment and educational programs.
  • Communicates and collaborates with leaders of faith communities to enhance the pastoral/spiritual care of patients and families.
Education

Minimum Level of Education Required: Master’s degree in Theology, Spiritual/Pastoral Care, or related field.

Area of study or major: Divinity, Theology, Pastoral/Spiritual Care.

Preferred educational qualifications: 4 Units Clinical Pastoral Education.

Experience

Minimum Level of Experience Required: 1 - 3 years of job‑related experience.

Knowledge / Skills
  • Professional spiritual/pastoral caregiving skills and competencies including a healing presence and empathetic listening skills.
  • Professional knowledge and personal integration of the human realities of suffering, pain, death, and dying and ability to be reasonably calm and comfortable when working in crisis and stressful situations.
  • Spiritual and emotional maturity.
  • A warm, friendly, understanding, and flexible personality.
  • Ability to communicate with and work in a collaborative and respectful manner with diverse persons representing various religious and spiritual needs and traditions.
  • Ability to think clearly in stressful situations.
  • Ability to work effectively as a member of an interfaith Spiritual Care Department.
  • Ability to articulate and advocate for ethical practices and decision‑making.
  • Basic computer skills (Microsoft Windows, Outlook, Word, and Electronic Medical Records applications).
