General Summary of Position
Under the supervision of the Spiritual Care Director the chaplain serves the spiritual, religious, and emotional needs of patients, families, and staff. The chaplain applies professional training and certification to assist patients, their family members, and staff in coping more effectively with life and end‑of‑life issues as they relate to spiritual and emotional well‑being. Within the context of each individual's life experience the chaplain may offer prayer or reflection. A graduate degree in divinity or a related field and ordination from an established religion are required.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
- Communicates with hospital staff regarding the ministry in the hospital and collaborates with members of the hospital care team to identify problems.
- Acts as a liaison between patient families and hospital staff during periods of crisis, such as difficult surgery outcomes or when patients are in the process of dying.
- Contributes to the achievement of established goals and objectives while adhering to department policies, procedures, quality and safety standards, and complies with governmental and accreditation regulations.
- Ensures that pertinent information regarding faith denomination, parish/congregation, and date of anointing are properly entered into the computer and that documentation follows hospital policies and procedures.
- Evaluates patient needs for spiritual guidance and counseling, and initiates or recommends individual programs and services to meet those needs, cooperating with the healthcare team in assisting patients to make personal adjustments.
- Assists in on‑call coverage and fills occasional staffing gaps as needed.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Prepares and communicates necessary reports to the Director/Manager.
- Provides for the specific needs of individual faiths by fostering an ecumenical approach to hospital ministry.
- Carries out assignments of the Director.
Education
- Bachelor's degree in Theology or a related field (required).
- Master's degree in a related theological field from an accredited college, university, or seminary (preferred).
- Ordination or roster as a Roman Catholic Priest, Jewish Rabbi, Protestant Clergy, or equivalent designated religious leader (required).
Experience
- 1–2 years of relevant pastoral ministry experience or equivalent, preferably in a hospital or healthcare setting (required).
Licenses and Certifications
- Certification as a Board‑Certified Chaplain (BCC) through one of the following certifying organizations: BCC/APC, NACC, NAJC, either at hire or within 18–24 months of hire, and within 2 years required.
- If a priest or minister ordained by a recognized religious body and endorsed by the proper ecclesiastical authority or equivalent designation: upon hire required.
- Two units of CPE from an accredited ACPE center upon hire required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Counseling, communication, and listening skills.
- Expertise in the ethical and moral field.
- Basic computer skills required.
Hiring Range
USD $59,820.00 – USD $101,275.00 per year.
