OhioHealth in Kentucky is seeking a hospital chaplain to deliver pastoral counseling and spiritual support to patients, families, and staff across the campus. This role develops a parish within the hospital and participates in ecumenical care with on-site worship experiences.

As part of a hospital-based pastoral team, you will join on-call rotations, provide rituals, and advise on ethical matters while supporting diverse faith groups. Bachelor’s degree and hospital ministry experience required.

  • Bachelor’s degree required with formal training in pastoral counseling.
  • Two years of ministry experience; at least one year in a hospital setting.
  • Strong communication and interprofessional collaboration skills.

Responsibilities

  • 60% Provides direct patient care as requested for emergent and routine requests; assesses spiritual needs and documents responses to align with plan of care.
  • 20% Participates in on-call rotation, including nights or weekends.
  • 10% Performs religious/spiritual rituals and non-pharmacological interventions; liaises with faith groups and community resources.
  • 5% Demonstrates knowledge of medical ethics, advance care planning, organ donation, futility of care, and patient rights; serves as ethics contact.
  • 5% Provides care across diverse settings including hospital, outpatient areas, extended care facilities, and homes.

Job Description Summary:

Provides pastoral counseling and spiritual support to patients, family members/significant others and staff throughout the hospital. Usually this involves development of a “parish” within the hospital. Actively serves as a member of an ecumenical pastoral care staff sharing in activities such as staff meetings, on-call responsibilities, and providing hospital wide worship experiences.

Responsibilities And Duties:
  • 60% Provides direct patient care as requested for emergent and routine requests. Assesses spiritual needs/concerns of patients and their families using clinical pastoral conversation. Communicates and documents patient responses to determine the effectiveness and congruence with plan of care
  • 20% Participates in on-call rotation which may include overnight or weekend shifts. .
  • 10% Provides appropriate religious/spiritual rituals, non-pharmacological interventions to patients, families, and interprofessional team. Acts as a liaison with the patients faith group/leaders including other community or cultural resources.
  • 5% Demonstrates knowledge of medical ethics and legal issues including advance care planning, organ donation, futility of care, and patient rights. Acts as a primary contact for ethics concerns and formal consultations.
  • 5% Provides care in diverse acute/non-acute settings including but not limited t o hospital, outpatient areas, extended care facilities, and homes.

Additional Job Description:

Knowledge of pastoral care and counseling skills, especially as practiced within the hospital setting. Two years ministry Experience , at least one year of this in a hospital setting.
