Job summary

Northeast Community Hospital in Arlington Heights, IL seeks a Chaplain – Spiritual Services for a per diem position. You will provide timely, person-centered spiritual care to patients, families, and staff, supporting end-of-life needs and ethical discussions.

Responsibilities include triaging requests, documenting visits in EHR, and collaborating with clergy and interdisciplinary teams to promote compassionate care.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree required; Master's preferred.
• 1 unit of Clinical Pastoral Education required; 2 units preferred.
• Minimum 1 year of healthcare experience (preferred).

Hourly Pay Range

$26.61 - $39.92. The hourly pay rate offered is determined by a candidate's expertise and years of experience, among other factors.

Chaplain – Spiritual Services – Per Diem Position

Location

Northeast Community Hospital – Arlington Heights, IL

Per Diem / Hours

Hours determined by department needs. Weekend shifts are needed: Saturday Day, Saturday Night, and Sunday Days preferred. Hours can be scheduled Sunday through Saturday 7am‑7pm and 7pm‑7am, including holidays.

What you will do

• Provides timely, person‑centered spiritual/religious/emotional care to patients, families, and staff.
• Supports patients and families with end‑of‑life care, sacramental resources, grief support, ethical concerns, and advance care planning.
• Serves as backup to Staff Chaplains and Resident Chaplains as needed to maintain 24/7 staffing.
• Triages and manages multiple requests effectively.
• Engages in evidence‑informed spiritual assessment and develops, documents, and implements a plan of care.
• Partners with community clergy and interdisciplinary staff, including Patient Experience and Employee Support Coordinators, to promote excellent care.
• Promotes patient safety by reporting safety issues and participating in safety initiatives.
• Documents and reports on spiritual care visits and participates in professional development activities.
• Physical requirements: Requires light physical effort; may require frequent periods of standing or walking, lifting or moving lightweight material, and occasional lifting of average‑weight material.

What you will need

Education

• Bachelor's degree required; Master's degree preferred.

Certification

• 1 unit of Clinical Pastoral Education from an accredited Association for Clinical Pastoral Education Center required; 2 units preferred.

Experience

• Minimum 1 year of experience in a healthcare setting (preferred).

• The interpersonal and empathetic skills necessary to effectively support patients, families, and employees in a variety of situations and settings.
• Analytic and communication ability to assess patients' spiritual needs and sense of well‑being, identify appropriate resources, and communicate both verbally and via written documentation, a plan of care.
• Ability to document visits using a variety of electronic resources.
• Commitment to teamwork and to contribute in a substantive, collaborative, positive way to the Spiritual Care team.
