Job summary

Mount Sinai Health System in New York seeks a clinical chaplain to provide pastoral care to patients, families, and hospital employees. You will respond to spiritual questions, coordinate services, and serve on committees addressing pastoral care within a major academic health system.

The role requires 3 years of clinical chaplain experience, completion of four quarters of CPE, and appropriate certification.

Qualifications

  • Three years of experience as a clinical chaplain.
  • Experience working with the public.
  • Completion of four quarters of Clinical Pastoral Education in an accredited program.
  • Certification by the National Association of Catholic Chaplains or the College of Chaplains.

Responsibilities

  • Visits hospital patients and families to provide pastoral care and guidance for psychosocial issues or illness-related adjustment.
  • Acts as liaison between patients and representatives of other denominations; connects with clergy as requested.
  • Provides support and spiritual guidance to hospital employees as needed.
  • Advises patient care staff and administration on medical/ethical concerns such as transplants or autopsies.
  • Liaises between hospital staff and families during crises such as critical illness or death.
  • Organizes regular and special religious services for patients, directly or via coordination with external clergy.
  • Develops and presents orientation and continuing education programs on pastoral care for hospital personnel and, when appropriate, community groups.
  • Serves on hospital committees related to pastoral care and may represent MSSM to community or health care organizations.
  • Keeps current in theology and pastoral practice through ongoing education and meetings.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Description

Provides pastoral ministry to patients, families and hospital employees. Conducts religious worship and performs other spiritual functions associated with beliefs and practices of religious faith or denomination as delegated by ordinance, license, or other authorization.

Responsibilities
  1. Visits hospital patients and families in order to provide pastoral care and guidance regarding psychosocial problems, or problems of personal adjustment to illness or disability, and responds to questions pertaining to religious and spiritual matters.
  2. Acts as liaison between patients and representatives of other religious denominations. Establishes contacts with patient's rabbi, priest or minister as requested.
  3. Provides support, pastoral care, or religious and spiritual guidance to Medical Center employees regarding personal and/or work related matters as needed.
  4. Provides advice and guidance to patient care employees, medical staff, and administration in response to medical/ethical concerns or issues such as transplants, autopsies, etc.
  5. Acts as liaison between hospital staff and patient's family and friends during periods of crisis such as critical illness, death or complex surgery.
  6. Provides for regular and special religious services for all patients either directly or by coordinating provision of services by clergy of other denominations.
  7. Develops and presents orientation and continuing education programs, regarding objectives and practice of pastoral care, to hospital personnel. May present educational programs to community groups as appropriate.
  8. Serves as requested on hospital committees concerned with issues related to pastoral care. May represent on behalf of MSSM to community or other health care organizations.
  9. Keeps current regarding theology and practice of pastoral care through participation in appropriate internal and external educational programs, and meetings.
  10. Performs other related duties.

Compensation

The Mount Sinai Health System (MSHS) provides salary ranges that comply with the New York City Law on Salary Transparency in Job Advertisements. The salary range for the role is $58661 - $74250 Annually. Actual salaries depend on a variety of factors, including experience, education, and operational need. The salary range or contractual rate listed does not include bonuses/incentive, differential pay or other forms of compensation or benefits.
