Job summary

Northwell Health is seeking a chaplain to deliver spiritual care across patient and family needs in the hospital setting. The role requires coordinating with the care team to support patients, families, and staff with empathy, active listening, and guidance across religious traditions.

The chaplain will participate in interdisciplinary care planning, provide counseling, and facilitate sacraments or memorial services as needed.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's Degree or equivalent required.
• Board certification from APCC/NACC/Neshama/Spiritual Care Association or COMISS-related certification required.
• Completion of four CPE units (1600 hours) in healthcare setting.
• Endorsement or recommendation by spiritual or religious organization.
• 1-3 years of healthcare chaplaincy experience required.

Responsibilities

• Applies patient care standards and spiritual care goals; offers religious and spiritual guidance to patients, families, and team members.
• Provides plan of care recommendations; demonstrates counseling skills in direct patient care.
• Manages time to meet patient/family/team needs.
• Maintains professional atmosphere through courteous communication; attends departmental/site meetings.
• Maintains professional competence through in-service/education; adheres to hospital dress code.
• Maintains satisfactory attendance; punctual; greets patients/families; assists as needed.
• Demonstrates active listening, emotional support and empathy to concerns; serves families of deceased patients as required.
• Visits patients regularly with priority to those in greatest need; collaborates with health team and volunteers.
• Documents records; facilitates sacraments/holidays; available for memorial services/funerals.
• Partners with community-based clergy or spiritual care leaders when requested.
• Operates under general guidance; independent decisions on course of action.

Delivers chaplaincy care to patients, family caregivers and team members, as appropriate. Ensures that religious and spiritual needs of patients, family caregivers and team members are met in assigned areas

Job Responsibility

• 1.Applies patient care standards and chaplaincy/spiritual care departmental goals in all patient care activities; offers religious and spiritual guidance to patients, family caregivers and team members.
• 2.Provides plan of care recommendations, as needed and appropriate, in a patient's interdisciplinary plan of care; demonstrates proficiency in identified counseling skills required in direct patient care.
• 3.Manages time appropriately to meet patient/family caregiver/team members’ needs.
• 4.Promotes a professional atmosphere through courteous communication with patients, family caregivers, providers and team members; attends/participates in departmental and site-based meetings and performance improvement activities.
• 5.Maintains and develops professional competence through required in-service and educational programs; complies with hospital dress code and maintains a professional image.
• 6.Maintains satisfactory attendance record; reports for duty punctually; introduces self to patient and/or family caregivers; offers assistance to anyone who needs assistance, escalates as appropriate.
• 7.Demonstrates active listening, emotional support, and empathy to patient/family caregiver concerns; services the needs of families of deceased patients, as required by staff.
• 8.Regularly visits with patients while giving priority to those in greatest need (as determined by goals and objectives); establishes positive working relationship with all members of the health team as well as with the volunteers.
• 9.Documents and maintains records, as required; facilitates the celebration of the sacraments and holidays, as appropriate; is available for Memorial services/Funerals.
• 10.Partners with community-based clergy, religious and/or spiritual care leaders, if/when requested.
• 11.Operates under general guidance and work assignments are varied and require interpretation and independent decisions on course of action.

Job Qualification

• Bachelor's Degree required, or equivalent combination of education and related experience.
• Current Board certification required from Association of Professional Chaplains Certification, or National Association of Catholic Chaplains Certification, or Neshama: Association of Jewish Chaplains Certification, or Spiritual Care Association, or College of Pastoral Supervision and Psychotherapy required, plus specialized certifications as needed. Certifications within the Council on Ministry in Specialized Settings (COMISS) may qualify for this position along with related healthcare field work experience.
• Completion of four (4) Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) Units (1600 hours) or equivalent within a healthcare setting, from an accredited CPE center/program, required.
• Endorsement or recommendation by spiritual or religious organization.
• 1-3 years of relevant healthcare chaplaincy experience, required.
