Job summary

Lake Superior Community Health Center seeks a Chief Financial Officer to lead strategic and day-to-day financial and clinical operations, including accounting, billing, cash management, investments, and grants management.

The role requires 3–5 years of supervisory experience, a Bachelor's in business or accounting (MBA/CPA preferred), and deep GAAP knowledge to ensure compliant financial reporting.

Qualifications

  • Three to five years of supervisory experience in a similar role.
  • Bachelor's degree in business, accounting, or related field, or equivalent experience.
  • Master's degree (MBA) or CPA is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare the annual budget and monthly reporting for leadership, Finance Committee and Board.
  • Analyze payer contracts and reimbursements to optimize payments.
  • Lead annual financial audit and ensure timely completion.
  • Supervise billing and accounting to meet government regs and GAAP.
  • Work with Operations to address program productivity and projectability.
  • Ensure HRSA requirements are met and financial information is shared for decision making.
  • Present monthly financial reports to board and committees.
  • Supervise finance staff and ensure internal controls.

Job description

The Chief Financial Officer is responsible for strategic and day-to-day financial and clinical operations of the organization, accounting, billing, cash management, investment management, and financial reporting. The Chief Financial Officer is also responsible for ensuring accuracy of all financial reports and the financial management of grants.

Primary Responsibilities:
  • 1.0 Prepare the annual budget and all related monthly reporting to share with the leadership team, Finance Committee and Board of Directors.
  • 1.1 Analyze third party payer contracts and other forms of reimbursement to optimize financial payments.
  • 1.2 Assume lead role in securing and ensuring the timely completion of the annual financial audit.
  • 1.3 Supervise and direct the billing and accounting operations to ensure adherence to government regulations and accounting standards, including meeting requirements of granting agencies.
  • 1.4 Work with the Operations Director to address program projectability and productivity.
  • 1.5 Ensure that financial operations meet all HRSA program requirements;
  • 1.6 Ensure that financial information is shared for effective operations, management decision-making, and oversight by the Board of Directors.
  • 1.7 Prepare monthly financial reports and accompanying analyses; present to board and finance committees.
  • 1.8 Work with Board committees and or the full Board on financial matters.
  • 1.9 Establish an environment that supports service excellence, high morale, and open communications.
Secondary Responsibilities:
  • 2.0 Participate in short and long-range planning and evaluation.
  • 2.1 Serve as member of senior leadership; represent LSCHC at PCA, HCCN and community meetings as required.
  • 2.2 Participation in CFO and Financial Director forums, as available.
  • 2.3 Maintain professional affiliations and enhance professional development to keep current in industry trends and issues.
Supervision Received:

Independent decision-making within areas of responsibility and organizational policy.

Consult with CEO/senior leadership and external resources as necessary.

Supervision Provided:

Supervises billing, accounting, and other Finance staff.

Infection Control and Safety Program Responsibility:

Ensure staff understand and are compliant with universal precautions and right to know.

Typical Working Conditions:
  • Must be able to integrate leadership and oversight responsibilities with daily financial operations.
  • Local and regional travel required.
  • Evening and/or weekend work may be required
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of financial systems.
  • Knowledge of health care environment and industry standards.
  • Knowledge of practice management and computer systems, programs, and applications.
  • Knowledge of GAAP standards.
  • Skill in organizing work, delegating and achieving goals and objectives.
  • Skill in financial analysis.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively orally and in writing.
Experience:

Three to five years experience in similar position requiring supervision of staff.

Education/licensure/registration:

Bachelors degree in business, accounting or related field, or equivalent in experience;

Master's degree in Business Administration (MBA) or Accounting and/or Certified

Public Accountant (CPA) preferred.

Previous FQHC experience preferred.
