Job summary

Henderson Engineers, Inc. in Lenexa, KS, is seeking a CFD Modeler III to develop and run 3D CFD models for data centers and other building types. You will prepare detailed simulation reports, provide data-driven recommendations, and mentor junior modelers to improve workflows and accuracy.

You’ll leverage Python and C++ scripting, collaborate with architects and project teams, and help advance design guidelines while supporting client communications and project delivery.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, architectural engineering, aerospace engineering, or a related field required.
  • Experience in Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), Heat Transfer, Thermodynamics, and Building Mechanical Systems required.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in CFD modeling and mechanical design required.
  • Demonstrated experience in using CFD analysis software (Fluent, Cadence Reality DC, or STAR CCM+) required.
  • Experience in programming languages such as C#, C++, or Python preferred.
  • Experience in data center and mission-critical projects required.
  • Familiarity in CFD analysis of various facility types, including healthcare, research labs, and large venues preferred.
  • Professional Engineer (P.E.) license preferred.
  • Ability to perform quality work within deadlines.
  • Effective communication and analytical skills with a commitment to quality and attention to detail.
  • High technical aptitude: ability to learn, understand and utilize various systems and processes.
  • Advanced knowledge and proficiency in engineering design, A&E industry, codes, design guides and standards required.
  • Intermediate proficiency in Revit and Bluebeam Revu preferred.
  • Team oriented and collaborative, with ability to work independently.
  • Prolonged periods of sitting or standing at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Occasional travel may be required (10-15%).
  • Ability to read, write and communicate in English.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in client, company and industry events to build relationships.
  • Lead communication with clients on requirements and scope; maintain proactive project updates.
  • Visit job sites to verify conditions and observe progress.
  • Assist in resolving conflicts among owners, architects, and contractors.
  • Maintain knowledge of industry software (Revit, Bluebeam Revu, MS Office).
  • Research new products, industry trends, and evolving codes and standards.
  • Support team goals by working with leadership on development efforts.
  • Perform a limited range of project management tasks under supervision.
  • May support project coordination activities as needed.

Job description

Position Summary

The CFD Modeler III is responsible for developing and running computational fluid dynamics (CFD) models to simulate building systems for various building types in the built environment. This role includes preparing detailed simulation reports and providing data‑driven recommendations to support design and operational decisions. They also mentor less experienced modelers and support development of team processes, tools and methodologies.

Key Responsibilities
  • Gather and validate all necessary data and information required for accurate CFD model development from internal and third‑party project teams.
  • Select appropriate CFD tools for various types of simulations based on project characteristics and requirements.
  • Independently develop and run 3D CFD models for mission‑critical data center projects simulating internal and external conditions. Additional project types include healthcare, research labs, large venues, and other building types.
  • Monitor CFD model convergence, troubleshoot and revise CFD models when simulations fail.
  • Analyze simulation results and prepare comprehensive reports detailing findings and recommendations.
  • Leverage scripting and automation (e.g., Python, C++) to enhance modeling workflows and accuracy.
  • Provide technical guidance to less experienced modelers, supporting growth opportunities for staff.
  • Collaborate on business development or pursuit activities.
  • Participate in client, company and/or industry events to build and maintain professional relationships.
  • Foster a client‑centric mindset and approach.
  • Lead communication with clients in the development and coordination of requirements and scope of work. Maintain proactive communication throughout the project cycle.
  • Answer questions from clients and architects.
  • Visit job sites to verify existing conditions and observe construction progress.
  • Assist in resolving conflicts involving owners, architects and contractors as needed.
  • Identify and seek to fill gaps in industry and/or discipline knowledge on a continuous basis.
  • Maintain knowledge and understanding of industry software, including Revit, Bluebeam Revu and Microsoft Office products. Act as a resource for training or assisting others as needed.
  • Research and review new products, industry trends and evolving codes and standards.
  • Understand and apply Henderson's design guidelines, standards, policies and procedures.
  • Support team goals by working with leadership on development efforts and leading efforts as needed.
  • Perform a limited range of project management responsibilities under the supervision of experienced managers. Ask questions when performing unfamiliar tasks.
  • May support or be responsible for project coordination activities such as managing emails, coordinating scope and schedule, attending client meetings, ensuring project quality, responding to client questions and coordinating project delivery.
