Education and Experience requirements consist of an associate's degree in dietetic technology or a closely related field; or two years of experience working under the technical supervision of a dietitian/nutrition therapist in a facility, institution, school, hospital or public health setting; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Must meet OPM requirements for Public Health Community Worker II classification or Dietetic Technician Classification.

Employees will be required to successfully complete an in-service training program.
The training is designed to enable the learner to proceed through the modules and activities at his/her own learning rate, but within a six-month period. Time required to complete instructional materials and assignments in both manuals is estimated at approximately 20 hours per month. It is recommended that one day a week be set aside for reading and completing assignments, observations, supervised activities, and conferences with the supervising nutritionist and/or other nutrition assistants. Upon successful completion of each module, the nutrition assistant will be prepared to perform specific tasks learned in the module. After successful completion of the six-month training and experience, the nutrition assistant will be prepared to perform all duties outlined in the functional job description.
Training and evaluation of the nutrition assistant is supervised and/or completed by the local agency public health nutritionist, who is a registered dietitian. In cases where the nutritionist is not on site, the local agency administrator will designate who is to provide direct on-site supervision. In most cases, this will be nursing personnel. During the training the nutritionist meets with and/or talks with the nutrition assistant on a weekly basis at a minimum, with biweekly meetings scheduled. After completion of the six-month training period, monthly training meetings will be conducted by the supervising nutritionist for skills update.
Evaluation of competency is measured by rating the nutrition assistant's ability to meet performance objectives outlined on checklists for each module. Post tests rate ability to meet knowledge objectives. A passing score of 85% or better is required for the post-tests and comprehensive evaluation. Nutrition assistants must meet the performance objectives listed for each module in the Module Evaluation Guide by the end of the six months training. The supervising nutritionist will complete progress evaluations monthly during the training.
Work is typically performed in an office setting with climate-controlled settings and exposure to moderate noise levels. While performing the duties of the job, employees are required to talk, stand, walk, and reach with hands and arms. This position requires long periods of sitting and daily use of computers and phones. Employees must be willing to perform all job-related travel associated with this position.
