Job summary

Terracon in Jacksonville, FL seeks an experienced Construction Inspector to perform field inspections, testing, and documentation across multiple disciplines. You will ensure compliance with project drawings, specifications, and codes while maintaining safety standards on site.

Ideal candidates have 2–4 years in construction inspection, a valid driver's license, and relevant certifications (CWI/AWS, ASNT Level II UT). ICC certifications are a plus.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• 2-4 years of experience in construction inspection.
• Valid driver’s license with acceptable history.
• CWI/AWS certification and ASNT Level II UT qualification.
• ICC certifications in structural steel bolting and welding preferred.

Responsibilities

• Perform testing, observation, and inspection per procedures to ensure contract conformance.
• Read and interpret construction drawings and specifications.
• Document findings clearly and prepare inspection reports.
• Document nonconformance and communicate results to the Project Manager.
• Assist in development of scope for testing and inspection services.
• Coordinate pre-dispatch activities with project and office managers.
• Maintain equipment and vehicle operation; follow safety standards.
• Interact with clients and site personnel to resolve findings.

Job description

General Responsibilities:

Construction Inspectors spend the majority of their time working on projects performing construction related inspection requiring specific certifications and/or experience. Perform daily inspection of construction projects monitoring quality and adherence to building code requirements, construction drawings and project specifications. Inspections may cross multiple inspection disciplines or within a specified area of expertise including structural steel, concrete, masonry, fireproofing, etc. Inspection may include visual/physical inspection and field testing to verify conformance with the plans and specifications. Prepare inspection reports and provide written documentation of observations and testing of materials. Communicate findings to engineer or project manager and when requested collaborate with the project team on solutions to potential issues. Adhere to strict safety standards.

Essential Roles and Responsibilities:

• Performs testing, observation, and inspection as directed in accordance with training and the specified procedures to determine if work is done according to contract specifications.

• Read and interpret construction drawings and specifications.

• Provides clear documentation of findings and results.

• Prepare inspection reports and document nonconformance.

• Performs basic analysis of data to verify accuracy before communication and submittal to the Project Manager.

• Communicates information to Project Manager and other personnel as directed by the Project Manager.

• May interact with client and other site personnel to provide input on appropriate resolution of findings.

• May assist Project Manager in development of scope for testing and inspection services

• Coordinate pre-dispatch activities with Project, Department, and/or Office Managers.

• Maintains equipment operation and calibration.

• May lead the activities of other engineering technicians on larger field projects.

• Drive a vehicle such as a Ford F-150 or equivalent.

• Arrive to the project sites in a timely manner.

• Submits clear and accurate documentation of findings and results daily.

• Communicates with dispatcher, project manager and contractor on a regular basis.

• Maintains assigned equipment and vehicle in clean working order.

• Follow safety rules and practices and other safety requirements for all projects. Follow the Smith System’s five keys to driving. Perform pre-task planning prior to executing work. Report any safety issues or concerns to management.

• Be responsible for maintaining quality standards on all projects.

Requirements:

• High school diploma or equivalent.

• Associates degree in Civil Engineering Technology or Construction Engineering Technology preferred.

• Minimum 2-4 years’ experience in construction inspection.

• Valid driver’s license with acceptable violation history.

• Certified Welding Inspector (CWI)/American Welding Society (AWS)

• American Society for Nondestructive Testing (ASNT) Level II certification:

  • Ultrasonic Testing (UT)

Preferred Certification(s):

• ICC certification in the following categories:
