Job summary

SSM Health Saint Louis University Hospital is seeking a skilled surgical technologist to assist in cardiovascular operating room procedures. You will prepare instruments, anticipate surgeon needs, and support patient care in a fast-paced CVOR environment.

Requirements include an accredited surgical tech program, two years in surgical technology with CVOR exposure, and BLS certification. On-site daytime schedule with comprehensive benefits offered.

Qualifications

• Completion of an accredited surgical tech program is required.
• Two years' experience as a surgical technologist with CVOR exposure.
• BLS HealthCare Provider certification; ABSA or NBSTSA CSFA credentials preferred.

Responsibilities

• Assist surgeons during cardiovascular operating room procedures with instruments and exposure.
• Prepare equipment and supplies based on care plan; adjust resources as needed.
• Maintain accountability for standard of care and mentor team members.
• Perform duties in a vigilant, safe manner and respond to surgeon needs.

Assists surgeons skillfully during cardiovascular operating room (CVOR) procedures.

Job Responsibilities and Requirements

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

• Uses surgical instruments consistent with their design and purpose as directed by the surgeon. Provides exposure of operative site through use of retractors and other instruments and through suctioning and sponging.
• Sutures varieties of tissue with the appropriate materials and techniques. Handles all variety of tissue appropriately to reduce potential for injury or compromised blood supply.
• Anticipates and plans individualized care based on advanced knowledge of the cardiovascular operating room (CVOR) surgical procedure and anticipates unexpected patient and surgeon needs.
• Prepares equipment, supplies and resources based on an individualized plan of care. Re-evaluates and modifies resource needs.
• Implements a plan of care that incorporates physician prescribed treatments, nursing assessments, and diagnostic data in a manner that is prioritized and integrated with the plan of care.
• Evaluates care given by team members and gives feedback. Maintains accountability for standard of care provided and acts as a resource to other team members.
• Works in a constant state of alertness and safe manner.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION

EXPERIENCE

• Two years' experience as surgical technologist with six months’ in CVOR

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

• Constant use of vision to judge distances and spatial relationships and to identify and distinguish colors.
• Constant use of hearing to receive oral communication, distinguish body sounds and/or hear alarms, malfunctioning machinery, etc.
• Constant lifting/carrying and pushing/pulling objects weighing 0-25 lbs.
• Constant standing and walking.
• Frequent lifting/carrying and pushing/pulling objects weighing 25-50 lbs.
• Frequent lifting/moving patients.
• Frequent bending, stooping, reaching and gripping.
• Frequent use of clear vision at 20 inches or less.
• Frequent use of speech to share information through oral communication.
• Occasional lifting/carrying and pushing/pulling objects weighing over 50 lbs.
• Occasional use of clear vision at 20 feet or more.
• Occasional use of sitting, squatting, twisting and repetitive foot/leg and hand/arm movements.
• Occasional keyboard use/data entry.
• Rare kneeling.

REQUIRED PROFESSIONAL LICENSE AND/OR CERTIFICATIONS

• Basic Life Support HealthCare Provider (BLS HCP) - American Heart Association (AHA)
• And
• Certified First Assistant - American Board of Surgical Assistants (ABSA)
• Or
• Certified Surgical First Assistant (CSFA) - National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA)
