Job summary

Memorial Hermann Health System seeks a skilled Surgical Technologist to provide proficient perioperative patient care as the first scrub in operative and invasive procedures. The role supports case readiness, instrument handling, and aseptic technique under the supervision of a Registered Nurse.

Graduates of a Surgical Technologist Program with BLS certification are encouraged to apply; CST or NBSTSA/NCCT certification is required.

Qualifications

  • Graduate of a Surgical Technologist Program.
  • Certified in Basic Life Support (BLS) and certified as Surgical Technologist by NBSTSA or NCCT.
  • Experience levels range from new grads to seasoned staff; CST workflow knowledge required.

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrates perioperative patient care concepts; acts as first scrub in assigned areas.
  • Supports readiness and flow of cases to facilitate unit functioning.
  • Verifies supplies/instruments/equipment prior to procedures; maintains asepsis.
  • Ensures safe care for patients, staff, and visitors; adheres to policies and standards.
  • Participates in ongoing education and supports department goals; mentors others.

Job description

Job Summary
  • Full time; 6:30pm-7am, every Friday-Sunday
  • NO Call required
  • CST and BLS (American Heart Assoc) required
  • Ortho experience a plus

Position responsible for providing proficient perioperative patient care through the use of equipment and instrumentation. Position functions as a scrub assistant to the physician performing operative and/or invasive procedures. Works under the direction of a Registered Nurse and as outlined in the Surgical Technologist Skills Inventory; uses knowledge/expertise to act as a role model and resource for other staff.

Position must be able to demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the patient served as well as knowledge of the principles of growth and development as it relates to the different life cycles.

Minimum Qualifications
Education

Graduate of a Surgical Technologist Program

License / Certification

Certified in Basic Life Support and current Certification as a Surgical Technologist by the National Board of Surgical Technology & Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) or National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT)

Experience / Knowledge / Skills
  • New Grad <1 year
  • Surg Tech I = 1 year
  • Surg Tech II = 2-4 years
  • Surg Tech III = 5+ years
Principal Accountabilities
  • Demonstrates knowledge and practice of perioperative patient care concepts; demonstrates the ability to perform independently as first scrub in assigned specialty areas.
  • Provides support for readiness and flow of cases to facilitate overall functioning of the unit, performing assigned duties as needed.
  • Verifies functioning and adequate availability of supplies/instruments/equipment prior to the surgical procedure as indicated by the surgeon’s preference card and other available resources; demonstrates the application of the principles of asepsis in a knowledgeable manner that provides for optimal patient care in the OR.
  • Ensures safe care to patients, staff and visitors; adheres to all Memorial Hermann policies, procedures, and standards within budgetary specifications including time management, supply management, productivity and quality of service.
  • Promotes individual professional growth and development by meeting requirements for mandatory/continuing education and skills competency; supports department-based goals which contribute to the success of the organization; serves as preceptor, mentor and resource to less experienced staff.
  • Demonstrates commitment to caring for every member of our community by creating compassionate and personalized experiences. Models Memorial Hermann’s service standards by providing safe, caring, personalized and efficient experiences to patients and colleagues.
