Job summary

Atlantic Health is seeking a Surgical Scrub and Patient Care Assistant to support operating room and maternity unit teams. You will assist in obtaining supplies, preparing instruments, maintaining sterile technique, and passing instruments to the surgical team.

Responsibilities include draping, counts, assisting with ADLs, recording vitals, and supporting the recovery transfer. The role requires attention to sterile procedures, teamwork, and compassionate patient care in a fast-paced environment.

Responsibilities

• Checks and gathers instruments for each case and maintains sterility according to surgeon's preference card.
• Operates within sterile field; opens sterile supplies and ensures proper wrapping integrity.
• Performs surgical scrub techniques and gown/glove procedures for self and team.
• Assists in breaking down setup and prepares instruments for sterilization and counts.
• Direct patient care including ADLs, hygiene, mobility, toileting, and emotional support.
• Measures and records daily weights, vital signs, I&Os, and monitors patient condition.
• Performs EKGs, phlebotomy and blood glucose monitoring as needed.
• Supports transfer of patients to recovery and helps restock the operating room.

Job description

Responsible for assisting nursing personnel in giving quality care to patients in the operating room & maternity unit. Performs duties and responsibilities of a scrub person under the direction of a registered professional nurse. Assists in obtaining supplies, equipment and opening of operating and other rooms, as necessary. Breaks down setup and prepares instruments for sterilization. Helps transfer patients to the recovery room and cleans and restocks the operating room.

Principal Accountabilities:

• 1. Checks and gathers all instruments for each case in assigned room with use of surgeon's preference card.
• 2. Checks sterility tapes, dates, and integrity of wrappers.
• 3. Opens sterile supplies for assigned cases, maintains a sterile field, and takes immediate action to correct any breaks in technique.
• 4. Performs surgical scrub techniques and gown and glove procedures for self and surgical team.
• 5. Arranges instruments, basins, sutures, and software in a precise manner for accurate count after the completion of surgical procedures.
• 6. Assists circulating nurses with counts of all sponges, cottonoids, needles, vessels loops, umbilical tape, penrose drains, and other devices and instruments.
• 7. Uses all devices and instruments appropriately and performs the standard draping technique.
• 8. Passes instruments to surgical team in a safe and efficient manner.
• 9. Direct patient care: Assists with ADLs, hygiene, mobility, toileting, and emotional support. Supports nursing personnel in providing direct patient care.
• 10. Assists patients with daily activities. Measures and records daily weights. Discontinues foley catheters. Measures and records vital signs, I&Os, and monitors patient condition.
• 11. Performs EKG’s, phlebotomy and blood glucose monitoring.
• 12. Performs other related duties as assigned.
