Job summary

Prisma Health in Parkridge Hospital seeks an entry-level Surgical Technologist to assist in patient care before, during, and after surgeries. The role requires scrub duties, aseptic technique, and adherence to safety and privacy standards within the operating room.

Ideal candidates will have completed a Surgical Technology program or military ST training and maintain 15 hours of ST education yearly, with certification (NBSTSA CST or TS-C) as applicable.

Qualifications

• Complete Surgical Technology program or equivalent military training.
• Maintain 15 hours annually of ST continuing education.
• Be certified: CST with NBSTSA or TS-C (SC prior to 2008) as applicable.
• No prior experience required for entry-level scrub role.

Responsibilities

• Assist in surgical procedures by performing scrub duties within the surgical team.
• Maintain aseptic technique and proper instrument counts during procedures.
• Prepare OR by organizing supplies, instruments, and equipment for cases.
• Care for specimens and assist with medication handling under RN direction.
• Support training and integration of new team members and participate in quality activities.

Job Summary

Assists in care of patients of all ages before, during and after surgical procedures by performing scrub duties and related functions as a member of the surgical team on a novice to advanced beginner level completing identified job competencies. Maintains patient safety, privacy and confidentiality. Complies with legal aspects of patient care. Complies with sterilization standards and standards for handling sharps or contaminated instruments. Participates in quality improvement activities and completes hospital required education annually.

Essential Functions

• Prepares for surgical procedures by collecting necessary supplies and instruments according to Surgeon Preference Card.
• Prepares the Operating Room for cases by opening sterile supplies, setting up table, arranging instruments and supplies according to type of case.
• Assists the surgical team during the operative procedure. Assists in maintaining correct count of instruments, needles and sponges. Identifies and cares for specimens. Handles drugs and solutions under direction of the RN.
• Cleans and prepares rooms between procedures and terminally clean at the end of the day. Returns unused supplies and instruments and extra equipment to proper storage.
• Maintains aseptic techniques; actively monitor situations which could lead to breaches in aseptic technique. Takes action to correct.
• Models Prisma Health behavior expectations. Assists with coaching, mentoring and training coworkers as assigned. Trains and assists with integration of new team members. Shares knowledge, ideas and expertise to support the team and the department.
• Completes annual age specific accountabilities.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Supervisory/Management Responsibilities

• This is a non-management job that will report to a supervisor, manager, director, or executive.

Minimum Requirements

• Education - Successful completion of a Surgical Technology program or Surgical Technologist training in the U.S. Armed Forces.
• Experience - No previous experience required.

In Lieu Of

• In lieu of the education requirement only, must be current with mandatory 15 hours annually of ST continuing education AND either have been employed as a ST in South Carolina prior to Jan. 1, 2008, OR have completed a ST military training program.
• Team members employed in this job prior to July 1, 2020, without surgical tech certification that are grandfathered under state law are not required to obtain certification but are required to complete 15 hours annually of continuing ST education

Required Certifications, Registrations, Licenses

• CST (Certified Surgical Tech) with NBSTSA; or may accept TS-C (Tech in Surgery) from NCCT certification IF employed as a surgical tech in South Carolina prior to January 1, 2008, or has completed a surgical tech military training program.
• Maintains surgical technology certification
