Job summary

Baptist Medical Center Hospital is seeking a Surgical First Assistant to support the operating surgeon and patient care during procedures in our OR team.

The role requires graduation from a Surgical First Assistant program with certification eligibility within 120 days and current BLS. 1 year OR experience is minimum; 2+ years preferred. Eligible to certify as a first assistant NBSTSA/ABSA/NSAA.

Qualifications

• Graduate of a Surgical First Assistant program with eligibility to earn certification within 120 days.
• Minimum 1 year of recent operating room experience with direct patient contact and sterile technique.
• 2+ years of recent operating room experience preferred.
• Must be Certified Surgical Technologist and certified first assistant through NBSTSA/ABSA/NSAA.
• Active healthcare provider BLS on hire; BLS within 60 days of hire.

The Surgical First Assistant assists the operating surgeon in the care of patient in surgery by performing selected duties. Provides direct and indirect technical care to surgical/obstetrical patients. Facilitates safe and effective conduct of invasive surgical procedures. Follows established practices and standards. Completes established competencies for the position within designated introductory period. Other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

MINIMUM EDUCATION: Graduate of a Surgical First Assistant program with eligibility to earn certification through National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA), American Board of Surgical Assistants (ABSA) or the National Surgical Assistant Association (NSAA) within 120 days from graduation.
PREFERRED EDUCATION:
MINIMUM EXPERIENCE: 1 year of recent operating room experience, including direct patient contact and the practice of proper sterile technique.
PREFERRED EXPERIENCE: 2 or more years of recent operating room experience
REQUIRED CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSURE: Must be Certified Surgical Technologist. Certification as a certified first assistant through the NBSTSA, ABSA or NSAA. Certification must be maintained either through continuing education or through recertification testing.
PREFERRED CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSURE:
REQUIRED COURSES/ COMPLETIONS (e.g., CPR): Must have active healthcare provider Basic Life Support on hire (ARC or AHA); however, must have AHA Healthcare Provider BLS within 60 days of hire.
