Job summary

YMCA of South Hampton Roads is seeking a Certified Sports Instructor to lead safe and engaging classes, tailor sessions to different skill levels, and promote the program within the community. The role emphasizes teaching techniques, building confidence, and integrating core YMCA values into daily activities.

Responsibilities include planning and assessing student progress, maintaining records, coordinating promotional events, and ensuring safety.

Qualifications

• Must be at least 18 years of age.
• Ability to deal with a variety of different personalities and learning levels among participants.
• Must maintain a certification from a nationally recognized organization or a substitut e of two years of sport-related education above the high school level.
• Must have a minimum of 2 years of instructor experience and strong knowledge of sport theory, training principles, techniques, and practices.
• Maintain all required sport certifications where applicable (active).
• CPR/First Aid/AED/O2 (within 30 days of hire).

Responsibilities

• Teach safe and challenging classes.
• Plan classes and tailor them to the skill level of the students and include new techniques.
• Demonstrate techniques and help students improve.
• Motivate participants to succeed through promotional levels or recitals.
• Adhere to class format as listed in class description.
• Develop leadership abilities in participants (e.g., assistant instructor, junior leader).
• Schedule promotional testing or recitals.
• Maintain records of participant levels for promotion.
• Handle orders for uniforms and supplies.
• Attend staff meetings as required.
• Fill out incident reports for accidents.
• Promote the sport program through demonstrations.
• Abide by YMCA COVID-19 sanitation practices.
