Job summary

Mount Southington Ski Area is seeking a Certified Race Coach to develop alpine athletes across ages and levels through structured training and race preparation. This seasonal, outdoors role emphasizes foundational skills, advanced racing techniques, sportsmanship, and a lifelong passion for the sport.

Responsibilities include coaching in alignment with program goals, creating a positive learning environment, and maintaining certifications per USSA standards.

Qualifications

  • USSA certification required.
  • CPR/First Aid/Stop the Bleed certification required.
  • PSIA certification preferred.
  • Prior coaching or teaching experience in ski racing or alpine skiing.
  • Experience working with young athletes.
  • Strong skiing ability with knowledge of racing techniques.
  • Excellent communication and leadership skills.
  • Reliability and punctuality.
  • Positive and team-oriented attitude.
  • Willingness to learn and apply training techniques provided by leadership.
  • Available to work 2 Saturdays in November for dryland training.
  • Available to work Thursday 6p-9p, Saturday 8a-2p, and Sunday 8a-2p from mid December to mid March (exact dates may vary).
  • Must be eligible to work in the United States.
  • Successful completion of background check.

  • Assist with training plans, skill development, and gate training
  • Communicate effectively with athletes, parents, and program directors
  • Participate in staff training sessions
  • Accurately record all hours worked, ensure time entries are complete, and promptly resolve any discrepancies prior to the end of each pay period
  • Complete required training as assigned by mountain leadership
  • Other duties as assigned by mountain leadership

The Certified Race Coach is responsible for developing alpine athletes across a range of ages and competitive levels through structured training, technical skill progression, and race preparation. This role fosters strong foundational skills, advanced racing techniques, sportsmanship, and a lifelong passion for the sport. Certified Coaches are expected to maintain all required certifications and comply with USSA standards as well as internal practices, procedures, and guidelines.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide high-quality race coaching in alignment with program goals
  • Create a supportive and fun learning environment
  • Assist with training plans, skill development, and gate training
  • Communicate effectively with athletes, parents, and program directors

Work Environment & Physical Requirements
  • Ability to stand, walk and ski for extended periods of time (up to 8+ hours)
  • Ability to perform repetitive physical tasks
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions, including cold temperatures, snow wind, and limited visibility
  • Ability to walk, stand and navigate snow-covered, icy, uneven, and changing terrain, surface and sub-surface conditions
  • Ability to lift up to 40 pounds
Compensation & Benefits
  • Compensation: $18.50/hour
  • Benefits: Complimentary ski/ride access for the duration of employment and employee discounts on food and beverages at participating locations (subject to mountain policy)
