Job summary

St. Mary's Hospital - Kankakee seeks a Certified Phlebotomy Technician to perform skin puncture and venipuncture for blood specimens across all ages, under supervision by Laboratory Director/Manager/Supervisor.

You will handle data entry, clerical tasks, ensure proper phlebotomy technique, and manage specimens across departments while maintaining clean storage and equipment. Part-time daytime shifts with benefits are offered.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or equivalent is required.
• Completion of a formal phlebotomy training program or equivalent on-the-job training with documented competency required.
• Certification as a Phlebotomy Technician required.
• BLS certification within forty-five days of hire and maintained current, according to hospital requirement.

Responsibilities

• Perform skin puncture or venipuncture on patients of all ages.
• Conduct computer data entry, filing, telephone communication and other clerical duties.
• Demonstrate proper phlebotomy technique and use of equipment.
• Process specimens across microbiology, immunology, hematology, coagulation, urinalysis, chemistry and blood bank.
• Load specimens on automated laboratory instrumentation per policy.

Job description

Responsibilities

The Certified Phlebotomy Technician primarily perform skin puncture or venipuncture on patients of all ages for the purpose of obtaining a blood specimen for analysis in the clinical laboratory and is under the supervision of Laboratory Director / Manager / Supervisor.

• performs computer data entry, filing, telephone communication and other clerical duties
• possesses adequate knowledge of the terminology of tests ordered in the laboratory
• demonstrates good communication skills and telephone etiquette in greeting patients and other visitors in a polite and friendly manner
• demonstrates proper phlebotomy technique and the use of equipment in collecting specimens from newborns to geriatric patients
• processes microbiology, immunology, hematology, coagulation, urinalysis, chemistry and blood bank specimens
• processes specimens for referral to reference laboratories
• stocks and orders routine supplies
• maintains the cleanliness of storage areas, trays, centrifuges, refrigerators, freezers and work areas
• processes or load specimens on automated laboratory instrumentation in accordance with established policy and procedures
• may assist to Pick up samples at hospital/ OR, assist lab specialty in sorting out samples for analysis and put away samples, assist pathology, inventory, replenish supplies, order supplies, mail pick up/ delivery, faxing, answering phone, product deliveries, etc..
• may work multi-departments or night shift/graveyard shift
• may be delegated as a Phlebotomy Lead
• other tasks or responsibilities may be assigned by the department manager/director

Qualifications

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, TRAINING

• High School Diploma, or equivalent, required.
• Completion of a formal phlebotomy training program or equivalent on-the-job training with documented competency required.
• Certification as a Phlebotomy Technician required.
• BLS certification within forty-five days of hire and maintained current, according to hospital requirement.
• Minimum of one year of clinical laboratory experience, preferred.

A reasonable compensation estimate for this role, which includes estimated wages, benefits, and other forms of compensation, is $17.33 to $25.09. The exact starting compensation to be offered will be determined at the time of selecting an applicant for hire, in which a wide range of factors will be considered, including but not limited to, skillset, years of applicable experience, education, credentials and licensure.
