Saint Mary of Nazareth Hospital is seeking a Certified Phlebotomy Technician to join the Clinical Lab team in Chicago. This full-time day shift position involves skin puncture and venipuncture on patients of all ages, specimen handling, data entry and proper communication with patients.

The role requires phlebotomy certification, completion of training, and BLS within 45 days of hire, with one year of clinical lab experience preferred.

Responsibilities

• Enter data, filing, telephone communication and other clerical duties.
• Demonstrate proper phlebotomy technique and use of equipment.
• Process specimens across microbiology, immunology, hematology, coagulation, urinalysis, chemistry and blood bank.
• Stock supplies and maintain cleanliness of storage areas and work spaces.
• May assist with sample pickup, multi-department tasks and shifts as needed.

Department: Clinical Lab

Schedule: Day shift- FULL-TIME--6:00am-2:30pm (primary shift) and/or 9am-5:30pm with rotating holidays and weekends

Facility: St. Mary of Nazareth Hospital

Responsibilities

The Certified Phlebotomy Technician primarily perform skin puncture or venipuncture on patients of all ages for the purpose of obtaining a blood specimen for analysis in the clinical laboratory and is under the supervision of Laboratory Director / Manager / Supervisor. This individual: 1) performs computer data entry, filing, telephone communication and other clerical duties, 2) possesses adequate knowledge of the terminology of tests ordered in the laboratory, 3) demonstrates good communication skills and telephone etiquette in greeting patients and other visitors in a polite and friendly manner, 4) demonstrates proper phlebotomy technique and the use of equipment in collecting specimens from newborns to geriatric patients, 5) processes microbiology, immunology, hematology, coagulation, urinalysis, chemistry and blood bank specimens, 6) processes specimens for referral to reference laboratories, 7) stocks and orders routine supplies, 8) maintains the cleanliness of storage areas, trays, centrifuges, refrigerators, freezers and work areas, 9) processes or load specimens on automated laboratory instrumentation in accordance with established policy and procedures, 10) may assist to Pick up samples at hospital/ OR, assist lab specialty in sorting out samples for analysis and put away samples, assist pathology, inventory, replenish supplies, order supplies, mail pick up/ delivery, faxing, answering phone, product deliveries, etc.. 11) may work multi-departments or night shift/graveyard shift. 12) may be delegated as a Phlebotomy Lead 13) other tasks or responsibilities may be assigned by the department manager/director.

Qualifications

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, TRAINING

1. High School Diploma, or equivalent, required.

2. Completion of a formal phlebotomy training program or equivalent on-the-job training with documented competency required.

3. Certification as a Phlebotomy Technician required.

4. BLS certification within forty-five days of hire and maintained current, according to hospital requirement.

5. Minimum of one year of clinical laboratory experience, preferred.
