Job summary

Cape Fear Valley Health System's Central Harnett Hospital in Lillington, NC, is seeking a Pharmacy Technician to assist in daily pharmacy operations and provide quality patient care. You will prepare medications, manage inventory, stock crash carts, and support both sterile and non-sterile compounding after training.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • PTCB certification or ExCPhT completion is required.
  • Registration with the North Carolina Board of Pharmacy or registration within 30 days of hire is required.
  • Pharmacy technician program completion is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in medication preparation by selecting, counting, compounding, reconstituting, packaging and labeling per guidelines.
  • Maintain and replenish up-to-date inventory of medications and supplies.
  • Stock and replace crash carts, drug boxes and other stocked items across the health system.
  • Refill and deliver unit dose cart fill, pyxis batches, IV admixture and bulk stock items to patient areas.
  • Perform sterile and non-sterile compounding after training and per procedures.
  • Participate in nursing unit inspections and surveillance to eliminate expired medications.
  • Protect patient privacy and confidential information.
  • Assist in precepting/training new pharmacy technicians and students.
  • Learn inventory, controlled substances, compounding, med histories and ADC operations within first year.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
Major Job Functions
  • Assist in medication preparation by selecting, counting, compounding, reconstituting, packaging, and labeling per established departmental guidelines
  • Maintain and replenish up-to-date inventory of medications and supplies stored
  • Stock and replace emergency crash carts, drug boxes, as well as other specialty floor stocked items (RSI kits, NICU Transport Box, etc.) throughout the health system
  • Refill and deliver unit dose cart fill, pyxis batches, parenteral TPN’s, IV admixture, and any bulk stock items in a timely manner to the correct patient care area
  • Ability to perform sterile and non-sterile compounding, once trained, following all procedures as outlined by pharmacy
  • Perform nursing unit inspections as assigned and participate in the department’s surveillance program for eliminating expired medications from the health system
  • Maintains and protects patients’ and hospital employees’ right to privacy as evidenced by the securing of confidential records and release of information to authorized persons only
  • Assists in precepting and training of new pharmacy technicians and pharmacy students
  • Orients and becomes competent in inventory, controlled substance, compounding, obtaining medication histories, and automated dispensing cabinet operations within first year of hire date
  • Other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications
Education And Formal Training
  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) required OR ExCPhT completion required
  • Registered with the North Carolina Board of Pharmacy required OR be registered within the first 30 days of hire required
  • Completion of pharmacy technician program preferred
Work Experience
  • 1-year experience as a pharmacy technician preferred
Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities Required
  • Proficiency in reading, writing, and speaking the English language
  • Competency and proficiency in telephone triage to provide excellent, prompt customer service
  • Critical thinking and ability to identify urgent situations and complete tasks timely to eliminate delays in patient care
  • Competency and proficiency with automated dispensing cabinet (ADC) drug distribution to refill and load noncontrolled and controlled substance medications
  • Detail oriented with an inherent quality for accuracy when performing activity within the department
  • Ability to work in a team environment
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to work various schedules including day, evenings and third shift to meet staffing needs
  • Perform repetitive motion including bending, twisting, stooping, pushing, and pulling
  • Ability to lift a minimum of up to 10 pounds
  • Ability to see and read physician orders, medication labels, etc.
  • Manual dexterity to use computer systems
  • Ability to stand and walk for long periods of time
  • Ability to climb stairs as needed
