UMass Memorial Health in Worcester, MA is seeking a Pharmacy Technician to support medication preparation, packaging and distribution under supervision. You will work in a fast-paced hospital pharmacy, handle inventory, and ensure accurate record keeping.

Candidates must complete a board-approved technician program, have a high school diploma, and be proficient with a pharmacy computer system. This non-exempt role offers 40 hours weekly and opportunities to grow within the health system.

Responsibilities

  • Perform duties in assigned practice area; staff other areas as needed.
  • Process orders using pharmacy computer system and deliver meds.
  • Prepare and package medications; sterile product preparation via aseptic technique.
  • Maintain inventory and monitor expiration dates; assist with audits.
  • Document activities per regulatory/hospital requirements and protect patient confidentiality.
  • Assist with continuous quality improvement and problem solving projects.

Under the direct supervision of a technician supervisor and pharmacist, performs medication related tasks such as packaging, preparation of all forms of medications, record keeping, and all non judgmental aspects of drug distribution.

I. Major Responsibilities:
  • 1. Performs duties in assigned practice area. Required to work in other practice areas, as staffing requires.
  • 2. Processes orders using pharmacy computer system. Delivers patient medications to medication room areas and stocks automated medication stations (Pyxis machines).
  • 3. Familiar with pharmacy technology and equipment. Capable of troubleshooting routine technical problems.
  • 4. Prepares and packages most forms of medications. Prepares sterile products using aseptic technique in compounding parenteral nutrition, antibiotics, and other IV drugs.
  • 5. Maintains inventory including floor stock medication. Reorders, restocks, and monitors expiration dates of all medications.
  • 6. Maintains required documentation in accordance with regulatory and hospital requirements and maintains respect for patient confidentiality. Assists in generating pharmacy reports.
  • 7. Conducts medication room inspections in assigned patient care area in accordance with regulatory requirements.
  • 8. Assembles drugs in an accurate and efficient manner for pharmacists to check; maintains a clean and orderly work area.
  • 9. Repackages bulk drugs in unit of use containers.
  • 10. Assists in quality indicator monitoring.
  • 11. Assists with yearly inventory in assigned areas.
  • 12. Participates in identifying problems or areas for improvement and assists supervisor with problem solving projects and improving operations; participates in Continuous Quality Improvement activities and/or teams.
Standard Staffing Level Responsibilities:
  • 1. Complies with established departmental policies, procedures and objectives.
  • 2. Attends variety of meetings, conferences, seminars as required or directed.
  • 3. Demonstrates use of Quality Improvement in daily operations.
  • 4. Complies with all health and safety regulations and requirements.
  • 5. Respects diverse views and approaches, demonstrates Standards of Respect, and contributes to creating and maintaining an environment of professionalism, tolerance, civility and acceptance toward all employees, patients and visitors.
  • 6. Maintains, regular, reliable, and predictable attendance.
  • 7. Performs other similar and related duties as required or directed.

II. Position Qualifications:
License/Certification/Education:

Required:

  • 1. High school diploma or equivalent.
  • 2. Must have successfully completed a Board-approved pharmacy technician-training program by obtaining a passing score on a Board-approved pharmacy technician assessment exam.

  • 1. Proficient in math. Knowledge and ability to use a computer for data entry.
  • 2. Must be able to follow oral and written instructions with accuracy, efficiency, and dependability.

Preferred:

Unless certification, licensure or registration is required, an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed in this description may be substituted for the above requirements.

Department-specific competencies, including age-specific competencies and their measurements, will be developed and maintained in the individual departments. The competencies will be maintained and attached to the departmental job description. Responsible managers will review competencies with position incumbents.

III. Physical Demands and Environmental Conditions:

Work is considered sedentary. Position requires work indoors in a normal office environment.
