Job summary

The University of Rochester is seeking a Pharmacy Technician to support pharmacists in daily medication preparation and distribution within the university’s health system.

You will handle medication orders, operate pharmacy technology, and ensure compliance with applicable regulations while delivering patient-centered service to campus patients.

Qualifications

• High School diploma required.
• Equivalent combination of education and experience acceptable.
• Previous pharmacy experience preferred.
• Active certification from a nationally accredited pharmacy technician program (PTCB) upon hire.

Responsibilities

• Assists pharmacist in the operation and maintenance of the pharmacy's drug distribution system.
• Prepares medication orders for dispensing under supervision of a pharmacist.
• Processes orders through pharmacy computer system and operates automated medication management systems.
• Performs medication re-packaging and maintains proper storage and logs.
• Performs inventory checks, monitors expiration dates, and communicates concerns to a pharmacist.
• Triages calls, defers clinical decisions to a pharmacist, and maintains patient confidentiality.
• Utilizes delivery systems and documentation for medication transfer to patient care areas.
• Completes other tasks as assigned by a pharmacist.

The referenced pay range represents the minimum and maximum compensation for this job. Individual annual salaries/hourly rates will be set within the job's compensation range, and will be determined by considering factors including, but not limited to, market data, education, experience, qualifications, expertise of the individual, and internal equity considerations.

Responsibilities:

GENERAL PURPOSE:

Assists pharmacist in the operation and maintenance of the pharmacy's drug distribution system, with a focus on quality, accuracy, patient care, and customer service. Prepares medication orders for dispensing under the supervision of a pharmacist. Processes orders through pharmacy computer system, operates automated medication management systems and technology, and physically prepares medication doses for pharmacist's review/approval prior to delivery to patients or patient care areas. Ensures that all work is completed in alignment with state, federal and local regulations.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

• Processes orders or dispense requests through the pharmacy computer system, including data entry where applicable. Prepares medication orders based on requests or recipes, including obtaining correct medication, determining the number of doses required for the defined time period, packaging medications in accordance with applicable laws, completing logs where required, utilizing safety check procedures where required, such as bar code scan confirmation, and assisting pharmacy in obtaining medication from ancillary areas when needed. Operates and maintains automated systems or technology that is part of the medication preparation process. Performs medication re-packaging processes where applicable to meet patient care needs or stocking requirements.
• Performs medication area inspections for quality assurance and communicates any immediate concerns to a pharmacist or supervisor for further action. Monitors inventory levels to meet patient care needs and communicates any concerns or recommendations to a pharmacist or supervisor. Stocks medication areas appropriately, including automated systems, to meet the needs of patient(s) based on demand. Rotates stock effectively, checking expiration dates to minimize waste and remove any expired medications from the area. Ensures proper storage requirements for medications, including oversight of monitoring systems, where required, for temperature and humidity control.
• Employs courtesy and uses constructive communication with pharmacy colleagues, customers, patients, and all hospital staff. Triages phone calls and handles medication requests appropriately, deferring all clinical decisions to a pharmacist for follow-up. Utilizes effective service recovery techniques to troubleshoot and solve problems that may arise in the medication use system and communicates resolution to appropriate staff promptly. Maintains patient confidentiality at all times.
• Utilizes medication delivery systems efficiently, including pneumatic tube systems and hand-delivery, and performs any required documentation for transfer or tracking of medications. Responds to urgent requests for medication delivery, as overseen by a pharmacist, to meet acute needs, including directly to patient care areas, medication stocking areas, or equipment.
• Completes other assigned tasks appropriate for certified pharmacy technicians, including projects or assignments overseen by a pharmacist related to the medication use process.

MINIMUM EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

• High School diploma required
• Or equivalent combination of education and experience
• Previous pharmacy experience preferred
