Job summary

St. Elizabeth Healthcare in Kentucky seeks a Pharmacy Technician to support the cancer care center with sterile compounding and medication distribution. The role operates Monday through Friday, 9am–2pm, with no weekends and regular hours.

The technician assists pharmacists in dispensing, labeling, maintaining IV rooms, and ensuring regulatory compliance. A strong emphasis on accuracy, AIDET communication, and patient safety is required.

Qualifications

  • High school graduate is required.
  • Registered with the state where work is performed.
  • Nationally Certified (PTCB or NHA) or active Intern license.
  • Superior performance with Certified Pharmacy Technician II position (SEH).
  • Completion within 90 days of hire: SEH Sterile Compounding competencies (Garbing/Aseptic Technique) and Media Fill Test.

Responsibilities

  • Answer the telephone timely and courteously (AIDET) or direct to appropriate person.
  • Process Epic Messages timely and accurately.
  • Assist pharmacist in dispensing medications and restocking Pyxis stations.
  • Perform sterile compounding including chemotherapy and TPN per USP 797/800; validate doses.
  • Label, store and process IVs; minimize waste; maintain IV room sterility.
  • Preceptor to new technicians; train and transition shifts.
  • Ensure timely receipt and delivery of patient medication information and products.
  • Distribute medications to units and process ADT per procedure.
  • Document medication histories and reconcile discrepancies in medical records.

Job Summary:

This position supports our cancer care center. Hours are M-F, 9am - 2pm, no weekends.

The Pharmacy Technician, under the direct supervision of a licensed Pharmacist and in accordance with all State and Federal laws, assists with the selection, procurement, storage, preparation, distribution, record keeping, and financial reconciliation of all medications dispensed to patients of St. Elizabeth Healthcare. While adhering to the ICARE principles and exhibiting the AIDET principles, demonstrates the respect, dignity, kindness and empathy in each encounter with all patients, families, visitors and other employees regardless of cultural background.

Job Description:

  • Answers the telephone in a timely and courteous manner (using AIDET process), answering queries or directing the call to the appropriate person for resolution.
  • Processes Epic Messages in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Assists the pharmacist in the dispensing of medications in a timely and accurate manner filling medication bins, filling labels, restocking Pyxis med stations and ancillary departments.
  • Preforms all aspects of sterile compounding of medications for direct infusion in to patients, including that of chemotherapy and total parental nutrition, through aseptic technique and compliance with USP 797 and 800 regulations and requirements.
  • Utilize metric system calculations to calculate appropriate doses required for sterile compounding.
  • Assists the pharmacists in labeling, storing and processing IV’s and managing and minimizing waste in the IV room.
  • Maintain sterility and maintenance of IV room equipment though routine cleaning and decontamination procedures.
  • Serve as a primary preceptor to new pharmacy technicians and provide education regarding the flow of the pharmacy and the duties of each position and train new pharmacy technicians to fulfill these shifts.
  • Ensures timely receipt and delivery of all patient medication related information and products by making designated rounds.
  • Properly distributes medications, including time sensitive and life-saving medications, and processes ADT (Admissions, Discharges and Transfers) per procedure.
  • Assists in assuring medications on nursing unit and all medication storage outside of pharmacy and offsite units are compliant with regulatory guidelines.
  • Perform patient medication histories which will include, but is not limited to, documenting the patients prior to admission medications accurately and completely.
  • Document resolution of discrepancy in the medical record so attending physician can review and reconcile.
  • Organize and deliver medications to patients if needed.
  • Participate in the Process Improvement Program and comply with all policies and procedures related to Infection Control and Safety to improve the quality of patient care and outcomes.

Education, Credentials, Licenses:

  • High school graduate
  • Registered with the state where work is being performed
  • Nationally Certified (PTCB or NHA) or active Intern license
  • Superior performance with Certified Pharmacy Technician II position (SEH)
  • Documented completion within 90 days of date of hire:
    • SEH Competency Checklist for Sterile Compounding: Garbing and Aseptic Technique
    • SEH Initial Garbing Evaluation and Media Fill Test

Specialized Knowledge:

  • Typing / computer keyboarding
  • MS Office
  • Understanding of pharmacy calculations and metric system
  • Automated Dispensing Cabinets
  • Carousel drug storage and or inventory management
  • Knowledgeable in the Epic system
  • Mastery of SEH IV preparation systems as appropriate (CATO)
  • Thorough understanding of USP 797/800 guidelines
  • 340B Purchasing Program

Kind and Length of Experience:

  • 24 months in an appropriate setting
  • Able to work competently in all positions within
  • inpatient pharmacy. Superior performance in sterile product compounding
  • Preform Medication History for necessary services.
