Job summary

Stars Behavioral Health Group is hiring a Peer Support Counselor in Downey, CA. The role focuses on outreach, engagement, support, advocacy, and direct services using lived experience in mental health and related systems.

You will work Tue-Sat, 8am to 4:30pm, with starting pay of $20.00–$21.00 per hour. The position offers growth opportunities, paid CEUs, and a comprehensive benefits package.

Qualifications

• High School diploma or equivalent (e.g. GED, HiSET, etc.) required
• Personal experience as a consumer in the child welfare, probation, or mental health systems
• One year of full-time experience performing non-professional, consumer directed services in a mental health, health care, or other social services agency/organization serving people with disabilities preferred
• Peer Support Specialist Certification: completion within one year of employment (required / preferred)
• Must possess a valid CA driver's license and maintain a driving record that meets the company driver eligibility policy
• First Aid certification from recognized programs (e.g., American Red Cross)

Responsibilities

• The position uses lived experience and knowledge of the system to provide outreach, engagement, support, advocacy and direct services to program clients of all ages.
• Peer Support Counselors serve as role models, companions, educators and advocates to our clients.
• Counsel clients in moving toward recovery and helping them create a meaningful role in life separate from their illness.

What you bring to SBHG (Qualifications)

• Peer Support Specialist Certification: successful completion of the certification process within one year of employment (required / preferred).
• Must possess a valid CA driver's license and maintain a driving record that meets the company driver eligibility policy.
• First Aid certification from persons qualified by agencies including but not limited to the American Red Cross.

How you will make a difference (Job Overview)

The position has primary responsibility for using their lived experience and knowledge of the system to provide outreach and engagement, support, advocacy, and direct services to program clients of all age ranges. Peer Support Counselors are people who have lived experience in the mental health, judicial, and/or social service systems in some capacity. They serve as role models, companions, educators and advocates to our clients. The Peer Support Counselors will support clients in moving toward recovery, creating a meaningful role in their life, which is separate from their illness

Division/Program Overview

• 16-bed facilities
• Designed for adults with mental health challenges or a recent crisis who need intensive treatment.
• 24/7 programs as an alternative to urgent care or hospitalization.
• Individuals can live on-site in a homelike setting for a short term while they receive counseling and learn basic living and interpersonal skills.
• Able to receive physical and psychological evaluation, mental health, and case management services, in addition to assistance locating permanent housing.
