Job summary

Community Council is seeking a Certified Peer Specialist to provide peer support in the community, visiting individuals at their homes, coffee shops, or other comfortable locations to support recovery.

You will engage participants, help develop wellness plans, and connect them with resources, with emphasis on mobility, dignity, and culturally competent care. The role is full-time and pays $20 per hour in a Philadelphia setting.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred; 2+ years mental health direct care experience.
  • Or a high school diploma/GED with 4+ years mental health direct care experience.
  • Clearances (Criminal, Child Abuse and FBI) and proof of Covid vaccination required.

About the Organization Our services are designed to be holistic, geographically accessible, culturally sensitive, and coordinated with other related service systems, both formal and informal. Community Council has a long history of providing mental health services to Philadelphia residents and is one of the City of Philadelphia's original 12 Base Service Units. We provide a range of mental health and substance abuse direct services and case management. The organization has a diverse staff of 200 that deliver evidenced based services in a culturally competent manner.

Description

The Certified Peer Specialist position is designed with recovery as the core value. The Certified Peer Specialist will provide peer support for individuals in the community who live independently. As a team member of the Program, the Certified Peer Specialist provides a personal level of engagement in an atmosphere that is conducive to learning the fundamental principles of recovery. The Certified Peer Specialist is fully mobile and offers specialized therapeutic interaction to individuals on their terms, be it in their homes, a coffee shop or any location in the community that is comfortable for both parties.

Position Requirements
PREREQUISITES & QUALIFICATIONS FOR THE POSITION
Required Skills/Abilities
  • Identifying strengths and goals of program participants.
  • Developing a Wellness Recovery Action Plan (WRAP) with program participants.
  • Assessing challenges related to time management, problem solving, social skills and self – esteem of program participants.
  • Assisting program participants with pursuing vocational and educational interests.
  • Assisting program participants with developing natural supports in the community to build self reliance.
  • Identifying community resources for assistance with any barriers to wellness and recovery for program participants. (NA & AA meetings etc.)
  • Assisting members through mobile support with community integrations and community needs.
Education and Experience
  • Preferred: A bachelor’s degree
  • PLUS two (1) years of mental health direct care experience, which may include experience in peer support services
  • OR
  • Need: A high school diploma or General Education Development (GED) equivalent
  • PLUS four (2) years of mental health direct
Mandatory Requirements
  • Clearances (Criminal, Child Abuse and FBI)
  • Proof of Covid Vaccination
  • Driver License
  • High School Diploma
  • Peer Support Certification (C.P.S)
Physical requirements
  • Must be able to walk
  • Must be able to travel up and down steps
  • Must be able to lift 15 to 20 pounds
