Job summary

Optum NY, seeking a Certified Ophthalmic Assistant to join our Miller Place team. You'll participate in patient care, perform preliminary screenings, and assist with eye exams using a slit lamp. You may administer dilation or anesthetic drops and support lens fitting.

Requirements include a high school diploma and JCAHPO certification; BLS and 2+ years ophthalmology experience are preferred. Office hours include Mon-Thu 7am-7pm and Fri-Sat 8am-4pm, with 8-hour shifts.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Certification as a certified Ophthalmic Assistant by the Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (JCAHPO).
• Ability to support shifts within the hours of operation (Mon - Thurs 7am - 7pm and Fri/Sat 8am - 4pm).
• BLS Certification (preferred).
• 2+ years of directly related experience working for an Ophthalmologist (preferred).

Responsibilities

• Participates in patient care under supervision, performing preliminary screening exams including visual acuity, history taking, tonometry, lensometry, motility, pupil assessment, visual fields, simple color vision tests, and may perform refraction.
• Examines the cornea, lens, and anterior chamber of the eye using a slit lamp and notes variations from normal; may administer dilation or anesthetic drops.
• Assists with patient contact lens insertion and removal training; stocks and maintains rooms; orders supplies and sterilizes equipment as needed.
• Performs clerical tasks including appointments, phone screening, answering phones, relaying messages, and updating patient charts.
• Maintains confidentiality and fosters a positive, respectful work environment; supports staff development and ongoing learning.
