Job summary

UNC Health's Rex Labor Delivery team is seeking a Surgical Technologist I to support Cesarean sections and obstetric surgeries with precision and compassion. Labor & Delivery Surgical Technologist – Make a Difference at UNC REX

Are you ready to play a vital role in bringing new life safely into the world? Join our fast-paced, high-volume Labor & Delivery team as a Surgical Technologist I, supporting life‑saving surgeries and critical care across the unit. Your expertise ensures the highest quality of maternal and newborn care in every procedure.

About Our Unit: The UNC REX Labor & Delivery OR provides comprehensive care throughout labor, delivery, and postpartum recovery. We specialize in caring for high‑risk antepartum and postpartum patients in a state‑of‑the‑art environment, including: 3‑bay OB Emergency Department (OBED), 20 labor rooms, 3 Operating Rooms (ORs), 3 Post‑Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) bays. Our nurses, surgical technologists, and assistants work closely with physicians to support Cesarean sections and obstetric procedures. The unit is staffed by OB Hospitalists, private practice OB/GYNs, and Certified Nurse Midwives (CNMs), ensuring rapid, expert care at every stage of labor.

What You’ll Do
  • Serve as lead surgical tech for scheduled and emergency Cesarean sections and obstetric surgeries.
  • First assist surgeons during Cesarean deliveries.
  • Prepare and manage surgical instruments and equipment with precision.
  • Maintain strict sterile technique to protect patient safety and prevent infection.
  • Collaborate with surgical teams to ensure smooth and efficient OR workflow.
  • Manage quick room turnovers, including stocking, cleaning, and prepping for the next procedure.
Secondary Responsibilities – L&D Unit Support
  • Assist with vaginal deliveries and room turnovers, maintaining attention to detail.
  • Support patient intake during busy periods, including transport, monitoring, and RN coordination.
  • Assist in the OB PACU with patient transfer, monitoring, and equipment checks.
  • Help manage patient flow and emergency needs in the OB Emergency Department.
  • Maintain a clean and safe environment, including linens, waste, and sanitization of equipment.

Additional Responsibilities
  • Perform technical skill duties in all operating room specialty service areas, ensuring that proper technical practices are employed according to accepted standards of process.
  • Provide proper maintenance, assembly, handling, and sterilization techniques of specialty instrumentation.
  • Follow aseptic technique and proactively identify contamination and/or breaks in aseptic technique and implement corrective actions.
  • Perform surgical counts, follow policies and procedures for incorrect counts and report discrepancies appropriately.
  • Label drugs and solutions; monitor quantities used.
  • Assist in the proper identification, preparation, handling, and labeling of surgical specimens.
  • Actively participate in the planning and set up of instruments, supplies, and surgical drapes in an organized manner to provide optimal accessibility during the procedure.
  • Assist the surgeon, demonstrating an understanding of the patient’s anatomy and abnormalities which affect the surgical procedure.
  • Assist in picking cases and planning of instrument needs.
  • Recognize and modify scrubbing procedures based on pertinent information to develop modifications to standard approaches to care and communicate with the surgical team.
  • Respond to surgical emergencies and follow hospital‑wide emergency management plans.
  • Inventory, receive, and store supplies under the direction of Surgical Services leadership.
  • Identify and report defective instruments, supplies, and equipment.
  • Assist with restocking operating/procedure rooms and sub‑sterile areas.
  • Assist the registered nurse during the intraoperative implementation phase of nursing practice.
  • Operate complex equipment and other resources in the operating room, troubleshooting as necessary.
  • Serve as a mentor for Surgical Technician Trainees and will serve as a preceptor as needed.
Education Requirements
  • None required as long as other position qualifications are met.
Licensure/Certification Requirements
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Provider certification.
  • Graduate of an accredited Surgical Technology or Nursing Program; or Graduate of a Military Training Program in Surgical Technology; or Formal education/training may be substituted for individuals with 3+ years of prior experience as a surgical tech.
Professional Experience Requirements
  • 0-3 years.

  • Successful completion of service specific portion of the UNC Health Surgical Technologist competencies.
  • Strong communication skills/customer service relations.
  • Excellent organizational/priority setting skill.
