Position Overview

The Certified Nurse Assistant provides nursing and nursing‑related services to residents in accordance with each resident’s assessment and plan of care. Care is delivered in a homelike environment, respecting the resident’s physical, mental, and psychosocial needs while fostering independence and dignity.

Essential Job Functions
  • Provide direct care to improve or maintain residents’ abilities per the plan of care.
  • Assist with Activities of Daily Living (ADLs): bathing, grooming, oral care, dressing, mobility, transferring, and feeding.
  • Perform bathing: transport to tub/shower, adjust water, wash, rinse, dry, and maintain privacy.
  • Assist with dressing: select clothing, help with fasteners, communicate clothing needs to Charge Nurse.
  • Restorative care: facilitate ambulation, range‑of‑motion exercises, proper body alignment to prevent contractures.
  • Toileting support: follow schedule, provide bedpan/urinal, clean and record output, perform catheter care per policy.
  • Mobility assistance: provide support for ambulation, push wheelchairs or Geri‑chairs, remove obstacles, report defects.
  • Transfer residents safely using correct technique and equipment, obtaining assistance when needed.
  • Meal assistance: set up trays, prepare food, feed those requiring total assistance, encourage chewing and swallowing, clean after meals, document intake.
  • Protect resident rights, dignity, and privacy; respect resident choices and property; avoid pet names.
  • Observe and report changes in social interaction, mood, or resistance to treatment.
  • Assist with care planning, prepare for state inspections, and attend survey training.
  • Follow infection control and facility policies; use PPE correctly.
  • Maintain accurate, legible resident records.
  • Communicate regularly with Charge Nurse and team.
  • Use proper body mechanics and equipment for lifting and turning residents of any weight.
  • Monitor and report safety hazards, housekeeping, and maintenance issues.
  • Report injuries to residents or self promptly.
  • Attend annual in‑service education (12 hours) and apply knowledge to job tasks.
  • Participate in fire and disaster drills and perform assigned duties during emergencies.

  • Prioritize tasks and complete duties within allotted time.
  • Respond productively to changes and additional tasks.
  • Perform essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation, without posing substantial harm.
  • Recognize changes in resident condition through observation and reporting.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Physical Capacities
  • Vision and hearing sufficient for functional performance or use of prosthetics.
  • Annual TB screening and physical examination.
  • Lifting capacity: minimum 25 pounds unaided; 100 pounds with assistance.
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, squat, push, stoop, and pull as required.
  • Mild intermittent activity throughout the shift.
  • Ability to cope with mental and emotional stress of the role.
Work Environment

Indoor work with normal temperatures, occasional noise, fumes, and chemical exposure. Potential exposure to blood‑borne pathogens. The role involves 24‑hour skilled care, emergency response, weekend and holiday duty, and handling residents with impaired cognition.

Qualifications
  • Education: Sufficient functional literacy.
  • License: Current CNA certification issued by the local Department of Health Services or proof of successful completion of an approved OBRA certification program. No adverse findings in the State Nurse Aide Registry.
  • Experience: Prior personal care experience with impaired individuals in a health‑care setting preferred.
  • Language Skills: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical information; effective verbal communication in English.
  • Mathematical Skills: Ability to perform basic arithmetic, including measurements of weight and volume.
  • Communication Skills: Exceptional customer‑service orientation, empathy, and effective communication with patients, families, staff, and external agencies.
