Position Summary

Administer oral and topical medications to residents. This individual must perform these tasks as ordered by a physician, under the supervision of a licensed nurse, and in accordance with state and federal rules and regulations. Also, must perform routine daily tasks required in maintaining the health, comfort and wellbeing of the residents.

Essential Responsibilities

• Administers medications as ordered by a physician under the supervision of a licensed nurse, in accordance with any state and federal regulations and consistent with community policy.
• Demonstrate knowledge of the “five rights” of medication administration and record all medication given to residents based on their specific chart.
• Take and record vital signs of residents as assigned or as may be required by certain medications.
• Record the administration of medications and/or treatments appropriately, utilizing the computer system to enter and reference resident information as needed.
• Observe and report any reactions and/or side effects of medications to a licensed nurse immediately.
• Administer PRN medications in accordance with state and federal regulations and consistent with facility policy.
• Ensure antiseptic techniques and good hand washing practices for infection control and utilize universal precautions.
• Report and, when appropriate, record any changes observed in condition or behavior of residents and unusual incidents.
• Submit incident/accident reports to supervisor or Administrator within twenty-four (24) hours after their occurrence.
• Communicate with medical staff, nursing service and other department supervisors.
• Supervise care staff in the absence of nurses.
• Maintain, clean and organize the Medication Room.
• Maintain a liaison with other department supervisors to adequately plan for resident activities.
• Attend all required training, in‑service and staff meetings.
• May be subject to handling and exposure to hazardous chemicals.
• May be subject to exposure to infectious waste, diseases, conditions, etc., including TB and the AIDS and Hepatitis B viruses.
• Maintain resident and staff confidentiality; treat staff and residents with kindness, dignity and respect.
• Comply with Resident’s Rights rules.

Requirements

• A high school diploma or GED; or one to three months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Certified Medication Aide certification required.
