Job summary

The Certified Medication Aide position at Cantex is responsible for administering oral and topical medications to residents under the supervision of a licensed nurse and in compliance with state and federal rules.

The role requires completing a state Nursing Assistant certification and medication administration certification where required, and fluency in English; candidates must perform duties to maintain residents’ health, comfort and well‑being.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

• Ensures secure storage and accounting for narcotics per policy.
• Attends facility education in-services.
• May supervise nursing assistants as assigned by the charge nurse.
• Maintains organized medication rooms and removes expired meds as required.

Job Summary

The overall purpose of the Certified Medication Aide position is to administer oral and topical medications to patients/residents. This individual must perform these tasks as ordered by a physician, under the supervision of a licensed nurse, and in accordance with state and federal rules and regulations. Also, must perform routine daily tasks required in maintaining the health, comfort and well-being of the patients/residents.

Qualifications

• State certification as a Nursing Assistant mandatory.


• State approved medication administration certification (where required).


• Ability to read, write, and speak the English language.

Essential Functions

• Administers medications as ordered by a physician under the supervision of a licensed nurse, in accordance with any state and federal regulations and consistent with facility policy.


• Demonstrates knowledge of "five rights" of medication administration.


• May take and record vital signs of patients/residents/residents as assigned or as may be required by certain medications.


• Records the administration of medications and/or treatments appropriately.


• Observes for and reports any reactions and/or side effects of medications to a licensed nurse or the appropriate shift.


• Administers PRN medications in accordance with state and federal regulations and consistent with facility policy.


• Documents reason for and response to PRN medications in a timely manner.


• May dispense narcotics and must account for them under the supervision of the licensed (or charge) nurse per facility policy.


• Properly secures medication carts/medication rooms per state and federal regulations and facility policy.


• Attends facility education in-services.

Essential Functions (continued)

• May make observation rounds under the supervision of the licensed nurse (or charge nurse) on the shift.


• May supervise nursing assistants/orderlies as assigned by the charge nurse (or charge nurse) on the shift.


• Ensures that medication room, med carts and medication refrigerators are kept clean and well organized.


• Ensures that any expired medications are removed for destruction per facility policy and procedures.


• Attends Quality Assurance meetings per request.


• Ability to function as a Team Leader/Role Model.


• Has reviewed Cantex Continuing Care Networks Clinical Policies and Procedures for Abuse Prevention and knows the employee\'s responsibility to enforce it.


• Responsible for assuring patient/resident safety.


• Performs other duties as assigned.
