Job summary

Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center in Seattle seeks a Medical Assistant III to support clinics, enable smooth patient flow and assist with procedures under physician and RN supervision.

The role encompasses patient care, preceptor duties, and collaboration with leadership to drive operational improvements within an ambulatory setting.

Qualifications

  • Completion of an ABHES/CAAHEP-accredited MA program or military training/experience.
  • Certified Medical Assistant in WA and familiar with state practice standards.
  • Current WA Surgical Technologist Registration within 30 days, depending on location.
  • Current BLS Health Provider Card with renewal every two years.
  • Minimum two years’ MA experience, preferably in ambulatory clinics.
  • Three years of relevant work experience.
  • Lead process improvement initiatives.
  • Ability to respond to emergencies per clinic protocol.
  • Experience with Electronic Medical Records.
  • Demonstrated initiative and willingness to advance technical skills.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal and customer service skills.
  • Proficient computer skills to support operations.
  • Familiarity with medical terminology.
  • Ability to multi-task, prioritize and solve problems.

Responsibilities

  • All Essential Functions of the MA I and MA II positions.
  • Act as a primary preceptor/trainer.
  • Work with leadership to facilitate training of new hires and other initiatives.
  • Assist nurse or provider with procedures as indicated.
  • Collaborate with clinic leadership to develop operational strategies and improvement efforts.
  • The MA/ST assists in delivery of patient care and procedure assistance under physician/RN direction.
  • Plan, organize and perform within scope as MA/ST, including equipment and supplies for procedures.
  • Prepare patients for procedures and assist in transport.
  • Assist in positioning patients and draping during procedures; pass instruments and sterile supplies.
  • Assist with sterile field maintenance and aseptic technique.
  • Observe for problems, equipment and supply needs during procedures.
  • Count and document supplies used during procedures.
  • Maintain neat, organized, safe work environment.
  • Assist in preparing, handling and transporting specimens for lab testing.
  • May assist in applying dressings post-procedure.
  • Assist in cleaning and restocking; notify facilities if repair is needed.
  • Maintain safe environment and aseptic technique in procedural areas.
  • Fiscal responsibilities: ensure equipment and supplies are charged; identify improvement opportunities.

The Medical Assistant III performs a variety of patient care, technical, and administrative duties to assist practitioners and other members of the healthcare team in providing high quality patient care throughout the health care system. The Medical Assistant participates as a team member in the overall function of the clinic. The Medical Assistant is responsible for the flow of patients for their assigned areas (as applicable) each day. They perform duties and procedure as describes by the Primary Responsibilities section.

In addition to primary responsibilities listed in the Medical Assistant III job description, the MA/ST will perform the following responsibilities:

The Care Neighborhood Medical Assistant/Surgical Technologist assists in the delivery of patient care and procedure assistance under the direction of a physician and/or direction/supervision of a registered nurse (RN). Functions within the boundaries of the roles and responsibilities of the MA/ST position.

  • Plans, organizes and performs within scope as a Medical Assistant/Surgical Technologist, including the collection of equipment, instruments and supplies necessary for procedures.
  • Prepares patients for procedures. Assists in transport of patients as assigned.
  • Assists in positioning of patients, including draping during procedures. Passes instruments and other sterile supplies to procedurist.
  • As appropriate, assists with equipment preparation to create a sterile field and maintain sterile techniques during procedures.
  • Continually observes closely and anticipates any special problems, equipment and/or supply needs throughout the procedure.
  • Count and document supplies used during procedures.
  • Continually works in a neat, organized, safe and efficient manner. Demonstrates good organizational skills.
  • Assist in preparing, handling and transporting specimens sent for laboratory testing.
  • May assist in applying dressings following procedure.
  • Assists in cleaning and restocking. Notifies facilities/engineering if cleaning equipment requires repair.
  • Participates in maintaining a safe environment, utilizing the principles of aseptic technique. Assists with the cleaning of the procedural areas.

Fiscal Responsibilities:

  • Ensures that equipment and supplies are charged appropriately.
  • Identifies and communicates opportunities for improvement in the efficient delivery of patient care.
Qualifications

Required:

  • Completion of a medical assistant program offered by a school accredited by the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES) or a program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP); or
  • Military Training or experience may satisfy training and experience requirements.
  • Certified Medical Assistant in the State of Washington and must be familiar with the State's conduct and standards of practice
  • Current Surgical Technologist Registration in the State of Washington within 30 days of hire as applicable, depending on location
  • Current BLS AHA Health Provider Card (or equivalent course, such as by the American Red Cross) and renewal required every two year.
  • Minimum two years’ experience as Medical Assistant preferably in an ambulatory clinic OR equivalent education/experience.
  • 3 years of relevant work experience
  • Lead process improvement initiatives
  • Ability to appropriately respond to emergencies or disasters per clinic protocol
  • Experienced in Electronic Medical Records
  • Demonstrates initiative as evidenced by advancing technical skills, sharing knowledge with others, and taking on more responsibility
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing
  • Strong interpersonal and customer service skills
  • Proficient in computer skills to support operations
  • Familiarity with medical terminology
  • Ability to multi-task, prioritize and problem solve. Ability to work in a fast paced, complex healthcare environment.

Preferred:

  • Completion of an accredited surgical technology program.
  • Experience assisting clinical staff in an acute care surgical setting or ambulatory surgery/endoscopy center.

The hourly pay range for this position is from $31.83 to $47.73 and pay offered will be based on experience and qualifications.Although Fred Hutch is not sponsoring most H-1B visas at this time, candidates who already hold an H-1B sponsored by another organization and are currently in the U.S. may be eligible for this position.Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center offers employees a comprehensive benefits package designed to enhance health, well-being, and financial security.
