Job Summary

MUSC Community Physicians (MCP) is a component of the Medical University of South Carolina that provides healthcare to patients throughout South Carolina’s rural health network.

Position

The Certified Medical Assistant supports a decentralized patient-centered approach to care and works under a physician’s direction to interview patients, measure vital signs, record or input information into the medical record, and prepare treatment rooms for examination.

Responsibilities

The Certified Medical Assistant reports to the Outpatient Clinic Manager. Duties include interviewing patients, measuring vital signs (pulse rate, temperature, blood pressure, weight, and height), recording or inputting information to the medical record, preparing treatment rooms for patient examination, performing basic computer tasks, maintaining annual competencies, following detailed instructions for therapeutic procedures, making accurate physical observations of patients, and communicating effectively both verbally and in writing.

Minimum Education and Experience

High school diploma or equivalent. Completion of an accredited medical‑assisting program with one year of patient‑care experience is preferred.

Required Licensure, Certifications, and Registrations

Certification through American Medical Technologist (AMT), American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA), National Health Career Association (NHA), or MedCA as a Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA), Certified Medical Assistant (CMA), or National Association for Health Professionals (NAHP). Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association (AHA) BLS, the AHA‑recognized equivalent, or the American Red Cross CPR/AED for Professional Rescuer and Healthcare Provider.

Physical Requirements

Ability to perform job functions while standing, sitting, walking, climbing stairs, and performing repetitive hand motions. Ability to work in confined spaces, lift and carry up to 50 lbs unassisted, perform gross motor and fine manipulation tasks, maintain 20/40 vision (corrected) in one or both eyes, maintain hearing acuity (corrected), deal effectively with stressful situations, work rotating shifts and overtime as required, work in a latex‑safe environment, maintain tactile sensory functions, and, where applicable, maintain good olfactory function or qualify for respirator use.
