Job summary

AdventHealth in Tarpon Springs, FL is seeking a qualified Surgical First Assistant to join our operating room team. You will prepare suites, select instruments per surgeon preferences, assist with hemostasis, wound dressings and drainage management.

You will work with a compassionate team to support patient rights and safety, maintain regulatory standards, and communicate effectively with surgeons, nurses, and staff. BLS, CSFA/CSA/SA required or preferred.

Qualifications

• Assists in setting up operating suites with surgeon-preference cards.
• Understands instruments, supplies and equipment used during procedures.
• Maintains patient rights, privacy and dignity during care.
• Keeps team informed to ensure efficient workflow in the OR.

Responsibilities

• Prepares surgical suites with required instruments and supplies.
• Assists with hemostasis and tissue manipulation as directed.
• Aids in wound dressing application and drainage management.
• Ensures visualization of operative sites and assists with suction and irrigation.

Job Description

• Utilizes physician preference cards to set up operating suites and updates cards as instructed.
• Determines appropriate surgical equipment and supplies based on physician preferences.
• Achieves temporary and permanent hemostasis using appropriate techniques.
• Assists with body plane closures, wound dressing applications, and securing drainage systems.
• Provides visualization for operative sites through tissue manipulation, retraction, sponging, suction, and irrigation.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Ability to prepare surgical suites with appropriate instruments, resources, and supplies based on surgeon preference cards
• Knowledge of instruments, supplies, and equipment utilized for surgical procedures
• Understanding of the procedures being performed and ability to anticipate the needs of the surgeon
• Strong physician/surgeon relationship skills and team mentality
• Up-to-date knowledge of patient rights and ability to respect cultural, psychosocial, and spiritual values
• Up-to-date knowledge of applicable regulatory, compliance, and accreditation standards and requirements
• Ability to communicate appropriately and effectively with patients and their family, hospital staff, nurses, physicians, and other health care professionals
