Job summary

Smith Ironworks in Hesperia, CA is seeking full‑time Field Welders to join our steel fabrication team. Responsibilities

• Careful initial planning of the job, reading and following erection drawings/plans.
• Using cranes to lift and guide steel components into position.
• Know crane signals and safe lifting practices.
• Align and level steel components before bolting and welding.
• Access higher sections with elevated platforms or ladders; forklift/boom lift certs a plus.
• Lay out and install metal decking and safety railing as the structure rises.
• Follow OSHA guidelines and maintain safety at all times.
• Operate hand and power tools, perform routine tool maintenance as needed.
• Stand for long periods; lift up to 50 pounds.
• Read and interpret specifications and blueprints for layout, assembly, and welding operations.
• Tack weld or weld components using GTAW or GMAW.
• Inspect components prior to assembly against blueprints.
• Cut workpieces with grinders and shears; weld in multiple positions.

Salary Range: $25.00 to $27.00 Hourly

Smith Ironworks is a professional steel fabrication company with a variety of products to fit all project needs. We are looking for motivated full-time regular Field Welders to join our team. You will be responsible for welding on structural iron, steel erection, and completing the tasks in a safe, timely, quality manner.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Careful initial planning of the job to be carried out, reading and following erection drawings/plans.
• Using cranes to lift and guide individual steel components into position.
• Knowledge of crane signals.
• Accurately aligning and leveling each steel component into place before bolting and welding them into fixed positions.
• Using mobile elevated work platforms, ladders, lifts as the structure gains height, to access sections off the ground. Forklift/Boom Lift certifications are a plus.
• Laying metal decking, and installing safety railing as the structure is built up.
• Health and safety is very important, so strict adherence to OSHA guidelines are a must and to be followed at all times.
• Regular use of a variety of both hand‑held and motorized tools and machinery is required.
• Standing for extended periods of time is common.
• Lifting of up to 50 pounds is required.
• Lay‑out, positions, and secures parts and assemblies according to specifications, using straightedge, combination square, protractor, and ruler.
• Tack welds or welds components and assemblies using GTAW or GMAW techniques.
• Inspects components prior to assembly, making sure they comply with manufacturing blueprints.
• Cuts workpiece, using powered die grinders, hand grinders and/or hand shears.
• Be able to weld in multiple positions.
• Analyze engineering drawings and specifications to plan layout, assembly, and welding operations.
• Equipment maintenance: perform routine maintenance on equipment and determine when and what kind of maintenance is needed.
• Display a basic mechanical aptitude. Familiar with equipment function and servicing requirements. Able to perform preventive maintenance as assigned.

Required

• High school diploma/GED required.
• MIG, TIG, or Stick welding experience.
• Minimum of 1-year experience in fabrication.
• Must be able to read blueprints/plans.
• Knowledge of reading erection drawings/plans.
• 2+ years’ experience as a Structural Steel / Misc. Erector.
• Driver’s License.
• Welding: 5 years.
• Ironworker/Erector: 5 years (Preferred).
• Blueprint/Plan Reading: 2 years.
• Structural Welding: 5 years (Preferred).
• Welding certification: NR-232 Certified Welder, AWS-D1.1 Certified Welder- 3G/4G.

Compensation Notice

Please note that this position involves both shop and field welding assignments.

• Shop Work: Hours worked in the shop will be paid between the hourly rate listed.
• Field Work: Hours worked in the field will be paid at an additional $3.00 per hour.

For example, if your shop rate is $25.00 per hour, the field rate would be $28.00 per hour for the hours worked in the field.
