Job summary

Family Health Care of Siouxland seeks a dedicated Medical Coder to join our Central Billing office in Dakota Dunes, SD. You will assign CPT, HCPCS, and ICD codes, ensure accuracy and proper sequencing, and stay updated with payer guidelines. CPC certification is required.

The role is non-exempt, full-time, offering collaborative teamwork, regular audits, and opportunities to improve documentation quality while supporting timely claims submission.

Qualifications

  • High School graduation or GED.
  • Strong knowledge of anatomy, physiology and medical terminology.
  • Commitment to a high level of customer service.
  • Solid oral and written communication skills.
  • Excellent typing and 10-key speed and accuracy.
  • Able to work independently but embrace teamwork and flexibility.
  • Minimum two year medical coding experience (preferred).

Responsibilities

  • Assign codes to procedures and diagnoses using CPT, HCPCS, and ICD codes; knowledge of HCC coding.
  • Ensure codes are current, accurately assigned and sequenced per regulations with high accuracy.
  • Stay up to date on payer guidelines and coding changes.
  • Follow up with providers on insufficient/unclear documentation; coordinate with clinical staff.
  • Conduct chart audits to ensure accurate and complete documentation; provide feedback to providers.
  • Monitor and reconcile outstanding voucher reports for missed charges.
  • Allocate payments in the system and complete processes as directed.
  • Prepare quarterly coding graphs.
  • Collaborate with billing to ensure timely claim satisfaction.

REPORTS TO: Central Billing Manager

Summary/Objective

Coding medical documentation for insurance claims.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES:

  • Assign codes to procedures and diagnoses using CPT (Current Procedural Terminology) codes, HCPCS (Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System) codes, and ICD (International Classification of Diseases) codes. Knowledge of HCC (Hierarchical Condition Category) coding.
  • Ensure codes are current, assigned accurately and sequenced correctly in each instance, in accordance with government and insurance regulations, with a high level of accuracy.
  • Keep up to date on various payer guidelines and new coding changes or opportunities.
  • Follow-up with the provider on any documentation that is insufficient or unclear. Communicate with other clinical staff regarding documentation when needed. Search for information where the coding is complex or unusual.
  • Conduct chart audits to ensure all documentation is accurate, precise, and complete, providing feedback/education to providers when necessary.
  • Monitor and reconcile outstanding voucher report for missed charges.
