Job summary

Government of the Virgin Islands is seeking an Automotive Mechanic to repair and maintain a wide range of automotive and hydraulic equipment. The role includes supervising in the absence of the supervisor and foreman and requires a solid understanding of engines, hydraulics, and safety practices.

You will inspect, repair, and test engines and systems, maintaining tools and coordinating parts. A journeyman level or equivalent training and experience are required, with clerical duties as needed.

Qualifications

• Completion of the twelfth grade including or supplemented by vocational courses in automotive mechanics.
• Two (2) years experience at the journeyman's level performing skilled tasks in repairs and maintenance of automotive and hydraulic equipment.
• Alternative: minimum tenth grade with four (4) years experience in automotive and hydraulic equipment and repair.

Responsibilities

• Repair and replace ignition systems, clutches, brakes, injectors, electrical generators and pumps.
• Maintain hydraulic systems of garbage collection and other heavy equipment.
• Disassemble and repair equipment such as dumpsters, loaders, pumps and other engines.
• Install and adjust rear ends, axles, drive shafts, transmissions and differentials.
• Assist supervisor in checking parts and making fuel reports.
• Perform routine clerical work as required.
• Inspect engines and hydraulic and braking systems to ensure proper operation.
• Maintain tools and equipment and submit requisitions for new tools.
• Test equipment and vehicles before and after repairs to ensure operating efficiency.

Job description

The work assignments involve the repair of the more complicated equipment. An employee in this class assists in the supervision of the shop in absence of the Motor Pool Supervisor and the Automotive Mechanic Foreman.The work assignments require added knowledge and skills in the performance and repair of hydraulic and other automotive equipment. The Motor Pool Supervisor or Automotive Mechanic Foreman supervises work for conformity with assignments and established standards of automotive repairs.

DUTIES (NOT ALL INCLUSIVE)

• Repairs and replaces, ignition systems, clutches, brakes, injectors, electrical generators, distribution, fuel pumps and water pumps.
• Assumes and maintains the hydraulic systems of garbage collection and other heavy automotive equipment.
• Disassembles, repairs, and re-assembles related automotive equipment such as dumpsters, loaders, pumps, concrete mixers, and other engines.
• Installs and adjusts rear ends, axles, drive shafts, transmissions and differentials.
• Assists automotive Mechanic Foreman in checking parts and making fuel reports.
• Performs routine clerical work as required.
• Makes periodic inspections of engines, electrical systems, hydraulic systems, lubricating systems, and brakes of automotive equipment to ensure proper working condition.
• Maintains tools and equipment in clean and good working order, submits requisitions for new or improved tools.
• Tests equipment, vehicles and machinery before and after repairs to determine need for repair or adjustment and to ascertain proper operating efficiency.
• Performs other related work as required.

Completion of the twelfth (12) grade including or supplemented by vocational courses in automotive mechanics, and two (2) years experience at the journeyman's level performing a variety of skilled tasks in the repairs and maintenance of automotive and hydraulic equipment

OR

A minimum of a tenth grade level education and four (4) years experience and training in automotive and hydraulic equipment and repair.

SPECIAL NECESSARY QUALIFICATION

Applicant must complete vocational training in the areas of automotive repair, there by receiving a certificate to substantiate the training.

FACTOR 1 - KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION

• Through knowledge of methods, tools and equipments used in the repairing of automotive and hydraulic equipment.
• Thorough knowledge of the principles of internal combustion engines.
• Thorough knowledge of occupational hazards and of safety precautions of the trade.
• Considerable knowledge of the departmental regulations and standards, which govern operation of the repair shop.
• Ability to make inspections, detect mechanical defects, and to perform a variety of necessary adjustments and repairs.
• Ability to assist in the supervision of small group of skilled or other workers assigned to a job.
• Ability to follow oral and written instructions, ability to perform moderately heavy manual labor.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and all others contacted in the course of work.
• Skills in the use of a wide range of tools and equipment of the automotive trade.

FACTOR 2 - SUPERVISORY CONTROLS

Work is assigned through mostly oral communications but as the employee becomes familiar with the routine duties involved, instructions become more general with detailed instructions required only for non typical, new, difficult or unusual aspects of the work.

FACTOR 3 - GUIDELINES

Guidelines consist of established rules, regulations, policies and procedures. Written and oral guides provide specific instructions for performing most of the duties involved, and generally little interpretation is required. When instructions do not apply, the problem is referred to the supervisor.

FACTOR 4 - COMPLEXITY

Work involves responsibility based on training and certification in the area of automotive repair and maintenance. It involves removing and replacing automotive equipment and machinery parts and making other adjustments required to keep these equipment serviceable.

FACTOR 5 - SCOPE AND EFFECT

The purpose of this position is to provide the department with a qualified certified automotive mechanic who can perform all phases of vehicle and equipment maintenance and repair work.

FACTOR 9 - WORK ENVIRONMENT

Work is performed indoors and outdoors as the need arises. It is mostly performed in a non-air-conditioned shop.
