Job summary

National Sports Medicine Institute in Lansdowne, VA is seeking a Certified Athletic Trainer to provide autonomous orthopedic sports medicine care. Qualifications

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in athletic training or related field.
  • BOC Certified Athletic Trainer, in good standing.
  • Current Virginia state licensed athletic trainer, or ability to obtain license.
  • Current CPR/BLS for healthcare provider.

Responsibilities

  • Obtain and document patient vitals, medical history (HPI), and perform brief physical examinations.
  • Present patient cases to providers with clear and professional clinical communication.
  • Apply and manage casts, splints, and braces as clinically indicated.
  • Educate patients on injuries, rehabilitation plans, dietary and exercise programs.
  • Instruct patients on DME use and post‑operative protocols.
  • Assist providers during routine clinical procedures (injections, sutures).
  • Coordinate orders for imaging, PT, labs, and related services.
  • Communicate with insurers to obtain authorization for medical services.
  • Develop work/activity restrictions based on functional assessments.
  • Complete patient documentation (FMLA, disability forms).
  • Support clinic operations with additional duties and special projects.

Certified Athletic Trainer

Job Overview

The Certified Athletic Trainer is a skilled, autonomous clinical professional who plays a critical role in delivering exceptional orthopedic sports medicine care. This position requires advanced clinical expertise, independent decision‑making, and the ability to manage complex patient interactions with a high level of professionalism.

The Athletic Trainer supports clinic operations by optimizing patient flow and serving as the primary user of the EHR, PACS imaging, and scheduling systems. Proactive thinking, strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to anticipate provider needs are essential for success in this role.

Responsibilities
  • Obtain and document patient vitals, medical history (HPI), and perform brief physical examinations
  • Present patient cases to providers using clear, concise, and professional clinical communication
  • Apply and manage casts, splints, and braces as clinically indicated
  • Educate patients on injuries, rehabilitation plans, dietary and exercise programs
  • Instruct patients on proper use and care of durable medical equipment (DME), casts, and post‑operative protocols
  • Assist providers during routine clinical procedures, including injections and suture or staple removal
  • Support providers during examinations and coordinate orders for imaging, physical therapy, laboratory testing, and related services
  • Communicate with insurance companies by phone and electronic portals to obtain authorization for medical services, including diagnostic imaging, DME, and medications
  • Develop appropriate work and activity restrictions based on functional assessments
  • Complete patient‑provided documentation, including FMLA and disability forms
  • Perform additional duties and special projects as assigned to support clinic operations
  • Communicate with MDs, DNP, PA, DPTs, PTA, Strength Coaches, Athletic Trainers, Administration and Patient Care Coordinators to ensure positive, efficient and informative patient experiences
  • Apply sport‑specific knowledge to modify therapeutic exercises, rehabilitation progressions, and activities of daily living (ADLs) based on injury presentation and functional goals
  • Assist in developing and reinforcing return‑to‑sport and return‑to‑activity recommendations in collaboration with providers
  • Assess functional movement patterns and activity demands to support safe progression through rehabilitation phases
  • Educate patients on activity modification strategies to promote healing while maintaining conditioning and functional independence
Salary

$55,000+ per year depending on experience

Education Requirements
  • Bachelors or Masters degree in athletic training or related field
  • BOC Certified Athletic Trainer, in good standing

Minimum Experience Preferred
  • One year in a medical office, hospital, or practice setting
  • Electronic Health Record (EHR) experience
  • Experience working with athletes or physically active individuals across a variety of sports and activity levels, with the ability to translate sport‑specific demands into functional rehabilitation and return‑to‑sport planning
  • Highly desirable: Orthopaedic Technologist Certification. Will provide education and opportunity to take OTC exam and reimburse exam fees
