Job description

Metglas, Inc., located in Conway, SC, is a world leading producer of Amorphous Metal Ribbon. Since our company began in the 1970’s, Metglas, Inc. (then Allied Signal located in Morristown, NJ) pioneered the development and production of amorphous metal, a unique alloy that exhibits a structure in which the metal atoms occur in a random pattern. The key to Metglas, Inc.’s proprietary manufacturing process is the rapid solidification of molten alloy at a rate of approximately one million degrees Celsius per second.

We are seeking a dynamic and innovative Ceramic Engineer to join our team and drive the development, testing, and optimization of advanced ceramic materials and components.

This role offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to cutting‑edge research and product development initiatives within the ceramics industry.

The ideal candidate will possess a strong background in mechanical and chemical engineering principles, with hands‑on experience in laboratory testing, manufacturing processes, and design software.

As a Ceramics Engineer, you will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of ceramic technologies by applying your expertise in materials science, fabrication techniques, and quality control standards.

Responsibilities of Position
  • Ensure the safety of self and others by diligently adhering to safe work practices and procedures.
  • Primary responsibility will be to improve the performance of the refractory components used in the melt/casting processes
  • Identify fundamental drivers of melt/casting quality and implement refractory improvements as necessary.
  • Must have the expertise, vision, drive, and communication skills to develop and implement improved refractory components.
  • Assess process variability and eliminate sources of special cause variation in our existing manufacturing practices.
  • Utilize statistical methods to lead specific optimization trials through the defining of key variables.
  • Perform analysis of process and performance data. Use analytical methods to assess factors that impact product quality and process efficiencies.
  • Research and propose changes to existing processes and procedures to drive major improvements in productivity and quality.
  • Identify and demonstrate alternate applications of new technologies to high‑impact products/processes.
  • Work with production engineers to manage the seamless implementation of new process operating conditions and procedures.
  • Develop partnership with operations personnel for effective communication & continuous improvement.

  • Develop and lead continuous improvement of refractory components.
Attributes/Skills Required/Sought
  • Familiar with high quality steel manufacturing and the use of ceramic components in steel casting processes.
  • Knowledge in the mechanical and thermal properties of ceramic components as they relate to structural integrity, chemical resistance, and wear characteristics.
  • Working knowledge of fluid flow analysis techniques.
  • Fundamental knowledge of analytical tools for mechanical and thermal stress analysis of ceramic components.
  • Ability to extend knowledge in ceramics to identify opportunities and improve products and processes.
  • Self‑motivated and goal‑oriented team player.
  • Excellent organizational, planning, & communication skills. Ability to manage multiple tasks.
Experience/Education Required/Sought
  • Requires 5 or more years commercial production experience using ceramic components
  • Metals manufacturing experience a plus.
