Job summary

Iredell Health System is seeking a Central Sterile Supply Technician to process and distribute medical supplies, equipment and trays for patient care. The role requires basic high school education and is hospital-based, with CNA preferred.

Candidate will support sterility protocols and maintain documentation. Responsibilities include cleaning, sterilizing equipment, testing sterilizers, managing stock, and logging usage.

Responsibilities

• Performs cleaning assignments, ensuring workstations, rooms and equipment are clean and orderly.
• Operates sterilizing equipment according to manufacturer’s instructions.
• Cleans and disinfects equipment, inspects for broken items and removes them from service.
• Performs daily biological testing on sterad unit and every load monitoring on steam sterilizers; documents results per P&P.
• Performs daily Bowie-Dick test on Hi-vacuum sterilizer and reports results.
• Checks for outdated supplies and reprocesses them; rotates dated stock on shelves.
• Audits carts and replaces supplies as needed to ensure accurate stocks.
• Maintains adequate sterile linens; requests additional linen supplies as needed from department.
• Checks all linen for cleanliness, holes and lint prior to assembly and processing.
• Checks order-entry system for printouts to dispense items in a timely manner.
• Helps make charges for supplies and equipment, if not charged on nursing units.
• Documents equipment and supplies issued to maintain log for recovery of items.
• Observes and reports any questions, concerns, changes or incidents immediately.

Job description

The Central Sterile Supply Technician is responsible for processing and distributing medical/surgical supplies, equipment, instruments and specialty trays for patient care. Regarding health information has access to demographics, billing, and limited clinical data relevant to the encounter. May have access to medication storage areas (excluding controlled substances) as related to job responsibilities.

Requirements

• High school graduate or equivalent.
• Hospital experience desirable, CNA preferred (listed with North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services Division of Health Service Regulation in good standing).

Physical Requirements

• Must possess full range of body motion to pass a basic FIT test to include bending, stooping, standing and sitting for extended periods of time.
• Must be able to lift and carry up to 30 pounds.
• May occasionally have to lift up to 100 pounds with assistance or assistive devices.
• Ability to stand, sit, or walk 8-12 hours a day.
• Ability to occasionally twist, reach overhead, stoop, kneel, or squat.
• Ability to perform repetitive tasks such as simple grasping, pushing, pulling, and fine manipulation.
• Good visual acuity is required for cleaning, inspection, packaging, sterilization of surgical instruments and supplies, performance of equipment testing, documentation of testing data, operation of sterilization equipment.
• Good hearing is essential for use of telephone, communication with sterile processing/OR staff.
• All employees with a Central Sterile Supply Technician job classification in the department of Nursing may have high risk exposure to blood borne pathogens or other potentially infectious materials and the use of PPE.

Job Specific Standards

• Maintains adequate supplies of sterile linens, requesting additional linen supplies, as needed from Linen
• Department.
• Checks all linen for cleanliness, holes and lint prior to assembly and processing.
• Checks order-entry system frequently for printouts to dispense items in a timely manner.
• Helps make charges for supplies and equipment, if not charged on nursing units.
• Documents equipment and supplies issued to maintain log for recovery of items.
• Observes and reports immediately any questions or concerns, changes, or incidents.

Reports to:

Registered Nurse, Charge Nurse, Nurse Director, Assistant Nurse Director, Administrative Nurse Supervisor, Assistant Vice President of Nursing, and Vice President of Nursing.
