Job summary

The Manager, under the direction of the Director of Surgical Services, is responsible for daily operational activities as well as the growth, development and mentoring of the Central Sterilization Department. The manager oversees the sterilization and distribution of medical instruments and equipment, ensuring a high standard of cleanliness and sterile conditions in the surgical services division. The manager is responsible for managing a team and implementing quality control measures.

Job Description:

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develop and implement Central Sterilization department policies and procedures in order to support continuous improvement and quality assurance. Assist with Endoscopy policies as needed.
  • Ensure consistent and high-quality results for cleaning, decontamination, preparation and sterilization of surgical instrumentation and fiber optic endoscopic equipment, supporting the mission of the BID Milton Hospital Infection Control and Prevention department.
  • Provide leadership, support and development to staff in Central Sterilization. Participate in the recruitment and orientation of new staff.
  • Assist with the planning and procurement of capital assets for surgical and procedural service areas.
  • Review and develop policies and procedures to assure compliance with regulatory agencies, including AORN, AAMI, SGNA, CMS and TJC standards.
  • Support and assist with the development and implementation of hospital-wide Infection Prevention and Environmental Services initiatives.
  • Prepare and monitor operating expense budgets for Central Sterilization and Endoscopy.
  • Develop goals and objectives for CS and Endoscopy that demonstrate and support Core Values.
  • Initiate and develop LEAN process improvement principles. Support and assist Director with implementation of KPI initiatives in the surgical and procedural division. Consistently promote and demonstrate a spirit of continuous improvement.
  • Establish standards of best practice that are compliant with the standards set by regulatory agencies and organizations such as DPH, CMS, TJC, AAMI, AORN, SGNA and BID Milton7s Infection Prevention department.
  • Ensure that practice complies with policies established for manual and mechanical cleaning, decontamination, high-level disinfection, drying, inspection, preparation and sterilization of all surgical and procedural instrumentation and equipment.
  • Ensure that documentation for sterilization processes is consistently completed, reviewed and reported to Infection Prevention Committee and as required to other committees.
  • Provide an information data base for staff to access in order to meet manufacturers7 recommendations for cleaning and processing instrumentation and equipment.
  • Monitor best practice for isolating and identifying clean and contaminated areas, equipment and traffic patterns, including proper use of personal protection equipment (PPE).
  • Manage all department activities so that operating budgets and department resources are kept in balance, including processing of payroll, scheduling of staff, utilization of overtime, rightsizing, etc.
  • Utilize excellent judgment regarding expenditures of all resources, primarily staffing levels and purchasing decisions. Identify ways to avoid increases in expense as well as ways to decrease expense.
  • Identify ways to improve space utilization and allocation within the surgical and procedural areas, particularly for sterile storage areas.
  • Evaluate and adjust resources as needed to support the daily Operating Room schedule.
  • Provide a comprehensive orientation to all new personnel and required training to all staff on an ongoing basis.
  • Prepare and review annual performance evaluations for CS staff. Maintain continuing education in the field of sterile processing through education, literature, webinars, and conferences.
  • Provide instructions and in-service in new products, procedures and equipment. Conduct and document department meetings to review procedures, email communications, etc.
  • Demonstrate a positive role model in all behavior, attitude, and work performance. Support and follow BID Milton Hospital7s Core Values and RESPECT, employee standards of behavior.
  • Coordinate with Biomedical Engineering, Materials Management and Facilities to establish a preventive maintenance program for all equipment and instrumentation.
  • Participate as an active member of hospital committees as assigned.
  • Employee maintains competencies (position specific and hospital-wide) required for the specific patient population served.
  • Performs all duties in accordance with safety and other laws, rules, and regulations set forth by appropriate regulatory and government agencies and in accordance with established department and hospital policies and procedures.
  • May be required to perform similar or related duties as may be necessary on an emergency basis or as designated by the department leader or supervisor.

Qualifications

Min Education: Associate degree, Bachelors preferred, in Surgical Technology program human sciences or aligned field

Min Experience: 5 years as Certified Surgical Technologist and /or Certified CS Technician.

3 to 5 years supervisory/management experience in an Operating Room, Endoscopy and/or Central Sterilization departments. Experience with analytical and strategic planning for growth and new program development in surgical and procedural areas.

Certifications: Certified Surgical Technologist and /or Certified CS Technician

Skills:

  • Excellent skills and experience in leadership, decision-making, communication, professional relationship-building and teamwork
  • Extensive knowledge of the principles of sterilization, decontamination, disinfection and aseptic technique
  • Excellent leadership, judgment, decision-making, analytical, communication and interpersonal skills

Pay Range:

$72,000.00 USD - $107,000.00 USD

The pay range listed for this position is the annual base salary range the organization reasonably and in good faith expects to pay for this position at this time.
