Job summary

Baton Rouge General is seeking a Central Sterile Processing technician to decontaminate, sterilize, and monitor SPD equipment. You will ensure accurate labeling, logging, and handling of reusable medical supplies in a fast-paced setting.

Qualifications

JOB PURPOSE OR MISSION: To process reusable medical/surgical supplies and equipment by proper decontamination and re-sterilization techniques.

PERFORMANCE CRITERIA

JOB FUNCTIONS

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS include, but are not limited to:

1. Decontaminates, sterilizes and monitors Central Sterile Processing equipment according to department standards and JCAHO guidelines.

PERFORMANCE STANDARDS:
Adheres to practices to safeguard employees from accidental exposure.
Performs decontamination techniques according to policy & procedure.
Packs and labels med/surg supplies and equipment accurately and logs each article in the sterilizer Log Book.
Loads sterilizer properly with med/surg supplies and equipment, and sterilizes according to established protocols
Maintains cleanliness of Central Sterile Processing area and monitors accordingly.
Monitors sterilizer functions by use of a Bowie Dick Test, chemical and biological indicators, temperature graphs/tape printouts for all sterilizers.
Maintains accurate log of sterilizer maintenance by Biomedical Engineering department and Advanced Sterilization Products & Services

2. Processes linens and gathers soiled equipment and reusable supplies from all nursing units for reprocessing and returns to Central Supply for redistribution (MC only).

PERFORMANCE STANDARDS:
De-lints, folds, and packs linen and assembles Linen Packs according to Operating Room specifications.
Sterilizes Linen Packs to meet demand of the Operating Room on a daily basis using PAR form for Operating Room linens.
Hand washes (as needed) and pressure washes (as needed) instruments according to standards.
Accurately counts & assembles instrument sets as stated on Assembly Count Sheet.
Makes routine rounds to all nursing stations to gather used reusable supplies and equipment.
Decontaminates equipment and supplies according to guidelines for return to Central Supply.
Logs in log book and brought to Central Supply for redistribution

3. Assemble case carts for the Operating Room (BB) schedule for the next day.

PERFORMANCE STANDARDS:
Uses pick ticket for defined surgical procedures to gather necessary med/surg items and instrument set(s) to accommodate OR’s schedule.
Unused stock from the Operating Room is put back on shelves for recirculation.
Prepares case carts accurately according to physician preference lists.
Notifies appropriate personnel of inventory deficiencies.

4. Implement Recall procedures according to General Health System policy & procedure.

PERFORMANCE STANDARDS:
Implements immediate recall procedures when notified by the Laboratory of a possible biological culture.
Gathers all affected sterilized supplies and notifies department managers and/or charge person of supplies not retrieved so physicians may be notified of their use.

5. Performs all other duties as assigned.

SPECIFIC EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

Previous experience in Central Sterile Processing or Operating Room schedule preferred.

Previous experience with medical/surgical supplies and equipment preferred.

SPECIFIC EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENT

High School Diploma or GED preferred, or 2 years work experience.

SPECIAL SKILL, LICENSE AND KNOWLEDGE REQUIREMENTS

HIPAA REQUIREMENTS:
Maintains knowledge of and adherence to all applicable HIPAA regulations appropriate to Job Position including but not limited to: patient demographics, patient information related to surgery or appointment schedules, information related to patient location.

SAFETY REQUIREMENTS:
Maintains knowledge of and adherence to all applicable safety practices appropriate to Job Position including but not limited to: Incident reporting, handling of wastes, sharps and linen, PPE, exposure control plans, hand washing, environment of care, patient identification.
