Job summary

Allegheny Health Network is seeking a Sterile Processing Technician to decontaminate, clean, assemble, sterilize and distribute surgical instruments, ensuring instrument availability for procedures and patient care areas.

Under supervision, you will follow safety policies, monitor sterilization cycles, document records, operate decontamination equipment, and deliver sterile items to departments, contributing to a safe healthcare environment.

Qualifications

• Minimum High School diploma or equivalent required
• For Central Processing Technicians hired after 12/29/2020: Pass a nationally accredited central service exam within 18 months of hire; maintain CRCST or CSPDT certification.
• A Surgical Technologist holding CST or TSC certification meets this license requirement.
• Preferred Sterile processing or six months experience in a hospital setting preferred.

Responsibilities

• Follow safety and infection control policies, procedures, and PPE requirements.
• Receive and sort contaminated instruments and equipment from various departments.
• Disassemble instruments and clean them using appropriate cleaning agents and equipment.
• Inspect cleaned instruments for cleanliness, proper function, and damage.
• Assemble instrument sets according to count sheets and tray lists.
• Wrap or package instruments and sets for sterilization.
• Monitor sterilization cycles and interpret printouts to ensure proper parameters.
• Operate and maintain automated washing and decontamination equipment.
• Load and operate sterilization equipment.
• Document sterilization cycles and maintain accurate records.
• Deliver sterile items to requesting departments in a timely manner.
• Maintain a clean and organized work environment.
• Other duties as assigned.

GENERAL OVERVIEW

This role is responsible for decontaminating, cleaning, assembling, sterilizing, and distributing surgical instruments and equipment. This role ensures that surgical instrumentation and equipment is properly processed and available for use in procedural and patient care areas, adhering to established policies, procedures, and regulatory standards. This role works under direct supervision, learning and applying the principles of sterile processing to maintain a safe and effective healthcare environment.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

• Follows all safety and infection control policies, procedures, and protocols and uses personal protective equipment (PPE) as required. (15%)


• Receives and sorts contaminated instruments and equipment from various departments. (10%)


• Disassembles instruments and cleans them using appropriate cleaning agents and equipment. (10%)


• Inspects cleaned instruments for cleanliness, proper function, and damage. (10%)

QUALIFICATIONS

• A Surgical Technologist holding an active Certification of Surgical Technologist (CST) or Tech in Surgery Certified (TSC) meets this license requirement.


• Preferred Sterile processing or six months experience in a hospital setting preferred.
